FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — The Mapleton and Fort Fairfield recreation department swim teams went head to head in the Northern Maine Community Recreation Association championship swim meet held Friday, Aug. 11, at the Fort Fairfield Community Pool.
A total of 37 young swimmers competed, with 31 representing Fort Fairfield and six representing Mapleton.
Maddy Winslow of Fort Fairfield scored 30 points and beat six other swimmers in the 8-and-under girls’ division. Ben Chartier of Fort Fairfield, with 35 points, got past four others in the 8-and-under boys’ division.
In the 9-10 girls’ division, which featured eight competitors, Hannah Chartier of Fort Fairfield came out on top by totaling 33 points. Fort Fairfield’s Anthony Betancourt won the 9-10 boys’ category. He tallied 35 points and beat two other swimmers.
Abbigail Benson of Fort Fairfield was the champion in the 11-12 girls’ division out of a field of four. She had 35 points in the meet. Mapleton’s Micah Calhoun, also with 35 points, beat two others in the 11-12 boys’ division.
Fort Fairfield’s Jessica Halsey compiled 35 points and topped three others in the 13-14 girls’ competition. There were no swimmers in the 13-14 boys’ age group.
Maddie Wing of Mapleton beat one other competitor in the 15-18 girls’ category and Jason Bernaiche of Fort Fairfield was uncontested in the 15-18 boys’ division. Both Wing and Bernaiche scored 35 points.
