CARIBOU, Maine — The Labor Day tradition of running continues this year in Caribou, with an eight-kilometer road race scheduled after youth races conclude earlier in the day.
The Caribou Labor Day 8K Road Race will be held Monday, Sept. 4, with walkers taking off at 10:30 a.m. and runners at 11 a.m.
The walkers will set out on a course five kilometers in length, while the runners will do an additional three kilometers. The race is the seventh in the County Challenge Racing Series. Pizza and drinks are available to all contestants following the race.
The race is a fundraiser for the Aroostook Musterds Scholarship, a $500 award that goes to a high school graduate planning to run collegiately. The fee is $12 in American funds and $15 Canadian for those over 13 years of age and $10 for those 13 and younger. T-shirts are free to all competitors, but for those not wanting a T-shirt, the fee is $5.
Registration takes place at the CHS ski building. Contact Chris Smith by email at christopher.smith@maine.edu or by phone at 768-9472 for more information.
A little earlier, the Aroostook Savings and Loan Viking Run will be held at the CHS track.
Registration for the 10 separate children’s races begins at 8 a.m. and the actual races get underway at 9 a.m. Runners from age 2 through the eighth grade are encouraged to attend.
Pre-K and kindergarten runners compete in a quarter-mile run, the first-, second-, third- and fourth-graders in a half-mile run and fifth-, sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-graders in a one-mile run.
There will be trophies for the top three male and female finishers in each race. Ribbons and T-shirts will be awarded to all the young athletes who take part.
