In recognition of national Women’s Equality Day on Aug. 26, a personal finance website released results of a gender equality study that placed Maine sixth best overall in the nation.
WalletHub conducted an in-depth analysis of 2017’s Best & Worst States for Women’s Equality, comparing all 50 states on several facets of workplace environment, education and health, and political empowerment.
While Maine was low to average on the earnings gap (between women and men), ranking 24th, and also on the minimum-wage workers gap at 21st place, the state ranked first in the educational attainment gap and unemployment rate gap, while it earned sixth place in political empowerment.
Maine ranked 13th in the gap for entrepreneurship rate and 15th in that for executive positions.
In order to determine where women receive the most equal treatment in American society, WalletHub’s analysts compared the 50 states across 15 key metrics. The data set ranges from the gap between female and male executives to the disparity in unemployment rates for women and men.
Ahead of Maine’s sixth-place rating, the top five were Hawaii in first place, followed by Nevada, Illinois, Minnesota and Washington.
