To the editor:
This past summer, one of Washburn District High School’s students was involved in a very serious car accident. News of the accident was heard all over Aroostook County, leaving many concerned and stunned, but the people of our communities have responded as we’ve come to expect — with dedication, commitment and generosity.
Each person has, in their own way, felt the need to do something. In truth, it is amazing what people have done and how we’ve rallied together. It is astonishing to see how this young man’s recovery has progressed. His courage and determination in facing the physical obstacles he has as he works towards recovery is remarkable, and a lesson to us all.
I wish to personally thank all of the individuals who helped with, participated in, or sponsored the fundraisers held in connection with Washburn District High during the past few weeks. The Three-on-Three Basketball Tournament, the August Festival Road Race and the Alumni Soccer Game were all very successful.
Each event was well attended and supported. These efforts and events were supported by people throughout all of Aroostook County from St. Agatha to Houlton and so many places and in between.
In the midst of all of this, our community also received the news of another tragic situation involving a former student. Without pause the community once more launched itself into efforts to support that cause as well.
The people of Northern Maine really do come together in times of need in ways that are too rarely seen in other places. I am incredibly proud to be from Washburn and from Aroostook County.
