Hodgdon plays soccer openers, SA teams debut Tuesday

Central Aroostook makes the trip to Dyer Brook Tuesday for girls’ and boys’ soccer matches against the Southern Aroostook Warriors, who will be playing their first countable games of the season.

The Panthers boys enter with a 3-0 record, while the girls stand at 2-1. Both the girls’ and boys’ contests will begin at 3:30 p.m.

A few other matches also are scheduled. Ashland’s boys and girls travel to St. Agatha to take on Wisdom at 4 p.m. and Fort Fairfield hosts Easton, with the boys’ game at 5 p.m. and the girls’ game following at 7 p.m.

On Monday, Aug. 28, Kassie Farley scored off a Raegyn Chavez assist with two minutes left in the first overtime period, giving Washburn its third win of the season in the 2-1 triumph over Hodgdon in Washburn.

The Beavers’ Madison Miller opened the scoring with a header off a Farley assist 22 minutes into the match before Hodgdon’s Emma Drew provided the equalizer with 13 minutes remaining in regulation. Madison Merritt had the assist on the scoring play.

It was Hodgdon’s first match of the season, while the Beavers played their fifth and are now 3-2.

Carly Bragg made five saves on seven shots in goal for Washburn, while Hodgdon goalkeeper Autumn Ganzel saved 10 of 30 shots.

“The team played with a lot of heart,” said Washburn coach Marcie Barbarula. “They never gave up and played very well together.”

In the boys’ match, Josh Palmer and Josh Foster scored early goals and the Hodgdon Hawks continued their offensive onslaught with four more tallies to take their regular season opener by a score of 6-0.

Dylan Oliver netted a pair of goals and had an assist, while Wyatt Foster and Bobby Ramsey each contributed a goal. Josh Foster finished with three assists. Michael Sanders recorded the shutout in goal for Hodgdon.

The Beavers fell to 0-5 on the season. Josh Jackson was Washburn’s goalkeeper.

In golf, the Central Aroostook Panthers are now 3-0 following a 10-1 match play victory over Southern Aroostook/Katahdin Monday at Va Jo Wa golf course in Island Falls. Isabelle Wright fired a 44 for the Panthers to take medalist honors. Shane Stackpole was a stroke back with a 45. Hunter Walker’s 51 led Southern Aroostook/Katahdin. CA totalled 195 strokes, compared to 241 by the hosts.

Houlton outshot the competition Monday at Trenton as the Shires posted a low score of 178, while Mount Desert Island finished one stroke back at 179. Ellsworth finished 202 and Foxcroft Academy was 204.

Houlton was led by Drew Marino, 43; Wyatt Harvey, 43; Nick Brewer, 45; Isaac Vega, 47; followed by Carson Grant, 52; Devin Ivey, 57; Rhetta Vega, 62; and Sidney Lorom, 65.

“These were the first matches of the year and played on a course the team has never seen,” Houlton coach Dave Grant said. “They did very well for the first time out. We should be one of the top five teams in Class C and we are only going to get better.”

The match marked the first varsity golf experience for both Rhetta Vega and Sidney  Lorom. “They both are going to be very good and could make a big impact at the regionals at the end of September,” coach Grant added.
