The fall sports season officially kicked off Monday as the Hodgdon soccer teams journeyed to Washburn, Houlton golfers played at Trenton and Southern Aroostook’s golf team hosted Central Aroostook.
In golf, Houlton outshot the competition Monday as the Shires posted a low score of 178, while Mount Desert Island finished one stroke back at 179. Ellsworth finished 202 and Foxcroft Academy was 204.
Houlton was led by Drew Marino, 43; Wyatt Harvey, 43; Nick Brewer, 45; Isaac Vega, 47; followed by Carson Grant, 52; Devin Ivey, 57; Rhetta Vega, 62; and Sidney Lorom, 65.
“These were the first matches of the year and played on a course the team has never seen,” Houlton coach Dave Grant said. “They did very well for the first time out. We should be one of the top five teams in Class C and we are only going to get better.”
The match marked the first varsity golf experience for both Rhetta Vega and Lorom. “They both are going to be very good and could make a big impact at the Regionals at the end of September,” coach Grant added.
At VaJoWa golf course in Island Falls, Central Aroostook remained unbeaten on the season with a 10-1 match play victory over Southern Aroostook/Katahdin Monday. Isabelle Wright fired a 44 for the Panthers to take medalist honors. Shane Stackpole was a stroke back with a 45.
Hunter Walker’s 51 led Southern Aroostook/Katahdin. CA totalled 195 strokes, compared to 241 by the hosts. The Panthers are now 3-0, while the Warriors are 0-1.
In girls soccer action Monday, Kassie Farley scored off a Raegyn Chavez assist with two minutes left in the first overtime period, giving Washburn its third win of the season in a 2-1 triumph over Hodgdon.
The Beavers’ Madison Miller opened the scoring with a header off a Farley assist 22 minutes into the match before Hodgdon’s Emma Drew provided the equalizer with 13 minutes remaining in regulation. Madison Merritt had the assist on the scoring play.
It was Hodgdon’s first match of the season, while the Beavers played their fifth and are now 3-2.
Carly Bragg made five saves on seven shots in goal for Washburn, while Hodgdon goalkeeper Autumn Ganzel saved 10 of 30 shots.
In the boys’ game, Hodgdon’s Josh Palmer and Josh Foster scored early goals as the Hawks continued their offensive onslaught to take their regular season opener by a score of 6-0 over Washburn. Dylan Oliver had two goals and an assist for the Hawks. Wyatt Foster had a goal and an assist, while Bobby Ramsey had a goal. Josh Foster also had two assists and Ross Lowery added one assist.
Michael Sanders recorded the shutout in goal for Hodgdon. Josh Jackson was Washburn’s goalkeeper.
The Beavers fell to 0-5 on the season.
