HOULTON, Maine — A local man was charged with leaving the scene of an accident Aug. 30 after his vehicle allegedly drove into the side of the County Yankee grocery store on Military Street.

Stephen E. Cole, 35, was pulling into the grocery store sometime during the evening of Aug. 30, when the pickup truck he was driving failed  to come to a stop and rammed the side of the building, according to Houlton Police Chief Tim DeLuca

DeLuca said faulty brakes were the cause of the incident.

The driver then fled the scene, without reporting the significant damage to the building, police said. The incident was captured on surveillance cameras outside the store and was reported to police at 9:35 p.m. by store employees.

Houlton police posted images of the incident on its Facebook page, which Deluca said led officers to Cole. He was located on Thursday, Aug. 31, and issued a summons charging him with leaving the scene of property damage accident.

There was no estimate on the damage to the building.
