Thursday was a busy day for local boys and girls soccer teams and golf squads as a number of teams were in action.
Play continues tonight, Friday, Sept. 1, as the Houlton football team hosts Stearns of Millinocket at 7 p.m. under the lights of the Maliseet Sports Complex. The game marks the beginning of the season for both squads.
In soccer, the East Grand boys and girls travel to Eastport to take on Shead Friday afternoon. The Viking girls play Shead at 3 p.m., followed by the boys game at 5 p.m. Easton hosts Ashland, with both the girls and boys playing at 3:30 p.m., while Fort Fairfield makes the trip north to St. Agatha. Both matchups begin at 4 p.m. Also on Friday, the Houlton girls host Lee Academy at 4 p.m.
On Saturday, Presque Isle finally opens regular season soccer play as the Wildcats make the trip south to take on John Bapst in contests to be played at the University of Maine at Orono. The girls’ match is at 11 a.m. and the boys’ match begins at 1 p.m. Caribou travels to Old Town, with the girls playing at 12:30 p.m. and the boys at 3:30 p.m. The Viking teams recorded victories in their openers at Fort Kent Aug. 25.

The Caribou and Presque Isle cross country teams make their debut when they participate in the Ellsworth Invitational meet which gets underway at 1 p.m.

Boys soccer
Fort Kent 7, Katahdin 0 — At Stacyville, Niko Naranja and Colby Theriault both scored two goals apiece to lead the 2-1 Fort Kent Warriors to the win over 0-1 Katahdin. Caleb Delisle, Vance Albert, and Noah Martin each added a goal as well.
Austin Plourde chipped in with 2 assists while keeper Reece Pelletier made 9 saves on 10 shots.
Katahdin keeper Tanner Lane made 14 saves on 22 shots.
Easton 6, Washburn 0 — Freshman Paul Bonner scored two goals and teammates Ryan West, Camden Michaud, Collin Sotomayor and Seth Faloon had one apiece as the host Bears improved to 3-2 with the home win over the winless Beavers.
Easton’s Kody Carter, making his first start in goal, saved four shots for the shutout. Josh Jackson collected nine saves for the 0-7 Beavers, who were blanked for the fourth time this season.
Girls soccer
Easton 3, Washburn 3 — The Beavers’ Kassie Farley scored with 6:45 to play in regulation to tie the match and the teams battled through two scoreless overtime periods in the draw at Easton.
Emma Lamoreau of the Bears opened the scoring with 21:19 left in the first half before Farley’s penalty kick nine minutes later tied it. Lydia Ferris gave Easton the lead heading into halftime as she scored at the 7:29 mark.
In the second half, Madison Miller made it 2-2 with a goal for Washburn that came with 27:26 remaining. Izzy Morin scored off a Summer Guess assist with 8:25 left to put Easton back on top before Farley’s second goal knotted it and closed out the scoring.
Carly Bragg saved 17 shots in goal for Washburn and Delaney Leach had 14 saves for Easton.
“We have a lot of first-year players and three eighth-graders, so we’ve had to take a step back on tactical play and really focus on the basics of the game, but the girls are starting to understand our concepts as a team and our style of play,” said Easton coach Audra Fitzherbert, whose team is now 2-3. “I only think we’re going to improve from here.”
Fort Kent 7, Katahdin 0 — At Stacyville, the Cougars proved no match for Fort Kent as the hosts were shutout. Fort Kent is now 2-1 on the season, while Katahdin is 0-1. Individual results were not reported.
Golf
Houlton 168, Mattanawcook 175, Carlisle 184 — At Houlton Community Golf Course, the host Shires topped the Lynx by seven strokes and Carlisle by 16 as four Shire golfers carded a 43 or better.
Drew Marino led the way for Houlton with a 41 and teammates Nick Brewer and Isaac Vega both came in with 42s. Wyatt Harvey was the final scorer with a 43.
The medalist was Mattanawcook’s Logan Thompson, a three-time Class C state individual champion, who shot a 37.
For Carlisle, Libby Boone was tops with a 43. Noah Rosado (46), Gabe Rand (47) and Seth Roy (48) followed.
