Fly ball — While sitting in a carriage last Thursday watching a ball game between Caribou and Old Town, Mrs. John Jerrard was hit in the side by a foul ball. Fortunately, no serious injuries resulted.
100 Years Ago – Aug. 30, 1917
Aplenty — In driving from Presque Isle to Caribou Monday night, one of our citizens met 29 automobiles. Seven of the new cars had compiled with the new ruling of the Public Utilities Commission regulating headlights, and 22 of them still used the bright, glaring, blinding lights.
75 Years Ago – Aug. 26, 1942
Paying tribute — The two Caribou theatres, Powers and Rudy, will join other movie houses of the nation in an effort to sell to their patrons. A special ceremony in tribute to Caribou’s boys and those of the surrounding vicinity in the armed services will be held at the Powers Theatre Wednesday evening, Sept. 2, when the historical feature film “United We Stand” is presented. Benefits will go towards the completion of the new swimming pool.
Cross Country cyclists — Two cyclists, Harry Zwitzer and Robert Chapman of Rochester, N.Y., recently stopped by Bill’s Service station Monday morning to give their bicycles a general check over after traveling 1,070 miles. The two men were on the road for 11 days after leaving Rochester for Montreal, then taking a route through the Three Rivers, Quebec City, along the St. Lawrence River, to the Gaspe, through Campbellton and to Caribou. The cyclists are are en route back to their homes in Rochester.
50 Years Ago – Aug. 30, 1967
Weekend thefts — Nighttime entries were made into two Caribou business establishments on the weekend, one at the Smoke Shop, Sweden St., during the night Friday, another at Plourde Furniture some after midnight Sunday. Nothing appeared to be missing from the Smoke Shop expect a broken-down adding machine. About $12 in coins was removed from the Plourde Furniture store after thieves got into the building through an overhead door in the back and jimmied open an inner door.
Expansion — Work is progressing rapidly on the expansion program being carried on by Mike Bell, owner of Mike’s Myty IGA on outer Sweden Street. An 800-foot addition is being constructed at the rear of the store. This will bring a total of over 2,500 sq. feet of selling space that will be utilized to bring the finest of produce, groceries and meats to the public.
25 Years Ago -Aug. 26, 1992
Council approves referendum — A Caribou charter amendment clarifying the city council’s power to help form a new health-care facility will be placed as a referendum question on the Nov. 3 ballot. The council acted on the question after a 50-minute public hearing and discussion Monday night at city hall. The ballot question surrounding the merger of Cary Medical Center and TAMC deemed necessary because of Cary’s status as a municipal hospital, the only one in state, council members were told.
