100 Years Ago – Aug. 29, 1917

    Sold T. V. Holdaway sold 2,069 lbs. of wool on Monday to parties in town.

    Purchased Fred Bishop, who bought the Auber farm on the Bangor road, has purchased the Albion A. Steward farm, adjoining his property.

75 Years Ago – Aug. 27, 1942

    Canning Mrs. Basil Campbell, neighborhood leader, invited Crystal women to her home on August 20 for an afternoon canning demonstration. Margaret Peaslee, home demonstration agent, was in charge and showed how to can beets in a pressure cooker and pears and plums in the boiling water bath.

    Benefit Monday morning at 10 o’clock a special benefit matinee will be held at the Houlton Theatre all proceeds from which will be donated to the fund which M & P Theatres Corporation is raising in New England for the purpose of purchasing ten field service ambulances for the American Army forces. During the first World War 600,000 wounded men were picked up by similar ambulances on the battlefields of France, and in the present conflict there is need for more ambulances as soon as possible.

50 Years Ago – Aug. 30, 1967

    Reopened The Houlton Bowling Center on Bangor Street, completely renovated and under the new management of Eddie Berube, will open for the season with free bowling and lunch. All new paneling has been applied to the walls and the interior has been all newly painted. Mr. Berube has purchased the Bowling Center from Elmer Smith. The 10-lane Center is the home of the men’s and women’s Recreation Department bowling leagues.

    Admitted Roger L. Sherman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Sherman of Hodgdon, was admitted to the Maine Bar Association at Portland. He is a graduate of Hodgdon High School in the Class of 1958 and graduated from Ricker College in 1962.

25 Years Ago – Aug. 26, 1992

   Miss Summerfest Jessica Walker of Island Falls, daughter of Warren Walker, was a recipient of an Island Falls Summerfest $500 scholarship. Second place went to Kendra Swallow, daughter of Kenneth and Carol Swallow, who received a $100 scholarship.

   Winner — John Pasquarelli, owner of County Yankee in Houlton, presented Richard Vantasel, the winner of a promotional give-away, with his prize of a 10-speed bike.
