Bridgewater mill suffers fire

BRIDGEWATER, Maine — A night-time fire on Friday, Sept. 1, destroyed a building storing lumber mill equipment for the Bridgewater Lumber Company, according to the Bridgewater Fire Department.

The Bridgewater Fire Department was notified about the fire at 172 Corner Road shortly after 10 p.m. on the Friday of Labor Day weekend, according to Matt Powers, the public information officer for the town’s fire department.

Powers said that crews arrived to find the fire consuming a building that houses the company’s equipment for sawing components of wooden barrels.

That building was destroyed, but crews from Bridgewater, Mars Hill and Monticello were able to prevent the fire from spreading to other buildings and nearby wood piles, Powers said.

It took 29 firefighters more than 2.5 hours to quell the blaze, and fire officials checked on the site of fire over the weekend, Powers said,

Owned by Bim and Christina Finemore, Bridgewater Lumber Company had insurance on the equipment, but not the building that was destroyed, Powers said.

The cause of the fire is not known and remains under investigation.
