The Presque Isle soccer teams came away with victories in their opening matches against John Bapst played at the University of Maine at Orono Saturday.
Madison Michaud scored goals in each half of her team’s 2-0 win over the Crusaders, while Randon Mortland had a pair of goals and Colby Carlisle netted the other in the boys’ 3-1 triumph.
Michaud, a junior, scored in the opening minutes and added an insurance tally in the second half as the Wildcats beat what coach Ralph Michaud called “a very talented” John Bapst team.
“It was a great team win,” said the coach. “The defense and [goalkeeper] Savannah Rodriguez held their ground for the shutout and Madison was cool, calm and collected in scoring her two goals.”
McKenzie Turner and Libby Moreau posted assists for PI.
In the boys’ contest, Mortland scored a first-half goal and then broke a 1-1 tie by connecting on a penalty kick midway through the second half to help lead PI past the Crusaders. Carlisle, a freshman, provided his team with a two-goal lead by scoring in the final 10 minutes.
The Caribou boys and girls also were on the road Saturday and both upped their record to 2-0 by beating Old Town.
Alex Ezzy scored a goal and assisted on another in the Vikes’ 3-1 win in the boys’ match. Hayden Hunter and Austin Findlen were the other goal scorers for Caribou. Cullin Caverhill had an assist and Noah Hixon saved four of five shots in goal. Jacob Harrison’s successful penalty kick for Old Town prevented Hixon from recording the shutout.
The Caribou girls had a much easier time, posting a 7-0 victory over the Coyotes. The Vikes were up 1-0 at intermission before scoring six times in a 30-minute span in the second half.
Ashley Matlock and Joycelyn Hartin netted two goals each, while Hope Shea, Searra Herbert and JoJo Fields contributed one apiece. Gabrielle Marquis was credited with a pair of assists, while Hartin and Edie Shea had one each.
“We didn’t finish well in the first half, but we controlled play,” said Caribou coach Todd Albert. “Our depth wore them down in the second half and we finished much better. Our defense did a nice job all game.”
Jaelynn Doody and Sage Dubay combined on the goalkeeping chores for Caribou.
