Supper benefits Haystack museum

The Haystack Historical Society will hold its annual baked ham fundraising dinner this coming Saturday starting at 4:30 p.m. at the society’s museum, 1565 Main St., Mapleton.

The dinner menu will consist of baked ham (low in salt), prepared by Ivan Pratt of Chapman. There will be two kinds of baked beans (hi-test and low-test), homemade potato salad, green salad, rolls and soda or water, as well as a variety of sweet treats.

Apple growing presentation

The Haystack Historical Society will host a presentation on apple growing by two experts on apples. First John Bunker who is affiliated with FEDCO, Maine Heritage Orchard at MOFGA and Out on a Limb CSA, will discuss the history and cultivation of little or unknown apple varieties. People attending are encouraged to bring their unknown apples to challenge him.

He said, “I may not know every variety brought in, but I do like to see new varieties that I have not seen before.”

John Hoffses, school farm manager for SAD 1, will speak on the program and activities of the school farm and its orchard and apple cider program. The farm has the largest active apple orchard north of Bangor. There are approximately 2,500 trees with 15 different varieties of apples in the orchard. The cider mill produces cider through the fall into midwinter. Cider is sold to school districts from Fort Kent to Bangor.

Contact any historical society member for further details.
