Young golfers from Houlton, Hodgdon and Southern Aroostook have been heating up the links at local golf courses this fall. All three squads kicked off their seasons last week with home matches.
The following is a recap of matches played through Monday, Sept. 4.
Houlton 168, Mattanawcook 175, Carlisle 184 — At Houlton Community Golf Course Thursday, Aug. 31, the host Shires topped the Lynx by seven strokes and Carlisle (a combined squad from Caribou and Presque Isle) by 16 strokes as four Shires carded a 43 or better.
Drew Marino led the way for Houlton with a 41 and teammates Nick Brewer and Isaac Vega both came in with 42s. Wyatt Harvey was the final scorer with a 43, followed by Carson Grant 49, Devin Ivey 56, Sidney Lorom 58 and Rheetta Vega 68.
The medalist was Mattanawcook’s Logan Thompson, a three-time Class C state individual champion, who shot a 37.
For Carlisle, Libby Boone was tops with a 43, followed by Noah Rosado 46, Gabe Rand 47, and Seth Roy 48. Others were Ian Mackinnan 64, Alex Cyr 59.
Others for MA were Max Woodman 41, Brandon Savage 46, Duncan McIntyre 51, Brandon Oliver 53 and Sedona Lesso 69.
Central Aroostook 7.5, Hodgdon 3.5 (match play) — Central Aroostook remains undefeated after outscoring Hodgdon in a match played at Houlton Community Golf Course Aug. 30. Shane Stackpole was the medalist with a 46 and teammate Tyson Cyr followed with a 50.
For the Hawks (0-1), Andrew Tuttle led the way with a 51 and Bryan Barton posted a 54. Additional Hawk golfers were not reported.
Southern Aroostook 6, Ashland 5 (match play) — Hosting Ashland Wednesday, Aug. 30, the Warriors nipped the Hornets at VaJoWa Golf Course in Island Falls. Hunter Walker of the Warriors and Graham Berry of the Hornets were the co-medalists, both shooting 55 on the afternoon. Additional results for the remaining golfers were not reported.
Southern Aroostook is now 1-1 on the season.
