The rainy weather has caused some changes to the Wednesday, Sept. 6, varsity sports schedule.
The Southern Aroostook at Ashland games originally set for Wednesday evening have been moved to Saturday. The boys will play at noon and the girls at 2 p.m. The Van Buren at Fort Fairfield doubleheader is now set for Monday, Sept. 11. The boys’ game will be at 6 p.m. and the girls will play at 8 p.m. The Katahdin at Washburn matchup has also been postponed, but no new date has been set, according to WDHS Athletic Director Ron Ericson.
Ashland’s golf team was slated to travel to Houlton to take on Hodgdon, but that match has been postponed to Monday, Sept. 11.
Wednesday’s slate of games include: East Grand boys and girls soccer at Hodgdon, both at 4 p.m.; and Fort Kent girls at Presque Isle at 7 p.m.
The Mattanawcook Academy boys at Houlton game scheduled for Wednesday has been postponed due to rain. That game will now be Wednesday, Sept. 27, at 4 p.m.
In games played Tuesday, the Madawaska girls nipped Central Aroostook, 4-3, in a battle between two strong programs which took place on the Owls’ home field.
All the scoring took place in the first half and the hosts took a 3-0 lead 24 minutes in before the Panthers battled back. Kate Levesque scored at the 15:10 mark and teammate Kayla Martin netted a goal less than five minutes later to allow CA to get within a goal. The Owls’ Hannah Nadeau then scored her second goal before Levesque broke through with 4:50 to play before intermission, but the match was scoreless the rest of the way.
Cassidy Beaulieu made nine saves on 12 shots in goal for 4-1 Madawaska and Macey Coffin and Caitlyn Harris combined for eight saves on 12 shots for Central Aroostook, now 3-3.
Summaries of other soccer games and a golf match played Tuesday, Sept. 5 follow:
Caribou girls 16, Washington Academy 0 — The Vikings eased past the visiting Raiders as Searra Herbert had three goals and Willow Whitten, Gabrielle Marquis, Emily Adler and Edie Shea put in two apiece to lead the attack. Kaytlin Waldemarson, Brooke Moir, Ashley Matlock, Megan Dube and Monica McLaughlin all added goals for 3-0 Caribou. Washington Academy, playing its opener, did not get off a shot in the contest.
Easton boys 6, Wisdom 0 — Kyle Flewelling scored two goals, while Collin Sotomayor, Camden Michaud, Isaac Currier and Owen Nicholson added one each as the Bears blanked the Pioneers in St. Agatha. Kooper Kinney, Seth Faloon and Gavin Pangburn contributed assists and Kody Carter needed to make just four saves for his second shutout of the season.
“We really moved the ball pretty well and kept the pace pretty high,” said Bears’ coach Ryan Shaw. “We are just working at being consistent as we gain more experience.”
Wisdom girls 6, Easton 0 — Also at St. Agatha, Breanna Lavoie notched three goals, Bailey Bellefleur added two, and Kaitlyn Chasse had one as the Pioneers are now 5-2. Easton’s record dropped to 1-5-1.
Central Aroostook boys 3, Madawaska 2 — The Panthers edged the Owls in a battle of two of the top teams in Class D, played at Madawaska. Central Aroostook remains atop the standings with its 6-0 record, while it was just the second loss suffered by the Owls in five matches. Scoring details were unavailable at press time.
MDI golf 171, Carlisle 180, John Bapst 196 — In a golf match played at Pine Hill Golf Course in Brewer, Carlisle beat John Bapst but lost to Mount Desert Island. Gabe Rand had a 42, Seth Roy carded a 44 and Noah Rosado came in with a 45 for Carlisle, now 3-4 on the campaign. Libby Boone and Isaac Madore each shot 49s.
