The Maine School of Science and Mathematics girls and boys soccer teams will finally get their season underway when they make the trip to Danforth to take on East Grand today. The girls match is at 3 p.m. and the boys play at 5 p.m.
MSSM was scheduled to kick off its abbreviated eight-match slate Thursday, Sept. 7, but the scheduled home games against Wisdom were postponed due to wet field conditions. So the Penguins are the last ones in the state’s North region to play a countable match.
Meanwhile, the Easton squads will already be playing their ninth games when they head to Washburn to take on the Beavers. Both matches begin at 4 p.m. The Katahdin boys and girls travel to Hodgdon for a 4 p.m. start. Van Buren has makeup games at Fort Fairfield this evening, with the boys playing at 6 p.m. and the girls following at 8 p.m.
In golf, Ashland makes the trip to Houlton Community Golf Course to take on Hodgdon at 3:30 p.m.; and Houlton travels to Mattanawcook Academy for a 3:30 p.m. match.
Summaries of soccer and golf matches held Friday, Sept. 8, and Saturday, Sept. 9, involving teams from the region follow:
Caribou girls 4, Brewer 2 — On Friday, the Caribou girls doubled up on a new opponent, Brewer, by a score of 4-2 in a match played at Caribou High School.
The Vikings, now 4-0, broke out on top 2-0 on goals by Ashley Matlock (off a Willow Whitten pass) and Gabrielle Marquis (from Searra Herbert) just a little over 10 minutes into the match before Brewer tallied a goal at the 16:38 mark of the first half.
Herbert then connected on a goal 41 seconds into the second half and Marquis notched her second goal to make it 4-1. The Witches (2-1) got closer on Emily Lord’s second goal late in the match.
“Brewer was a tough opponent and we knew we needed to play with intensity, connect passes and rise to the occasion to win,” said Caribou coach Todd Albert.
Brewer boys 3, Caribou 2 — Also at CHS Friday, the Vikes fell behind 3-0 at intermission before mounting a comeback that fell just short.
Gavin Matthieu netted two of the three first-half goals for 2-0 Brewer. The other came on an own goal.
Alex Ezzy and Cullin Caverhill scored second-half goals for Caribou. Matt Mousseau saved eight of 19 shots for Brewer and Noah Hixon collected five saves on 10 shots for the Vikes (2-1).
Central Aroostook girls 12, Easton 4 — Kate Levesque scored four goals, Kassie Levesque and Kayla Martin netted two each and Libby Grass, Brooke Blackstone, Brea Bradbury and Amy Gerritsen each had one as the Panthers moved to 4-3 Friday in a match played in Mars Hill. For the Bears, who dropped to 1-6-1, Isabelle Morin notched a hat trick and Lydia Ferris had a single goal.
Central Aroostook boys 5, Easton 1 — The Panthers are a perfect 7-0 after winning the home match Friday. Hunter Wardwell was dominant offensively as he scored four of his team’s five goals. Ben Thomas had the other. Brayden Bradbury was the winning goalkeeper with four saves on 10 shots. Collin Sotomayor scored for the Bears, who dropped to 4-3. Kody Carter saved three of 18 shots.
Hodgdon girls 4, Woodland 0 — At Woodland Friday, Emma Drew’s two goals led Hodgdon to the win. Sidney Crane and Sabra Scott added goals for the Hawks. Autumn Ganzel saved 13 of 17 shots for the Hawks, while Sadie Smith collected 12 saves on 19 shots for Woodland.
Houlton girls 8, Calais 1 — At Calais Friday, Kolleen Bouchard recorded three first-half goals as the Shires rolled past Calais. Bouchard also added another goal in the second half and had two assists, while Sierra Hoops tallied three goals and an assist. Rebecca Mooers added a goal.
Tessa Solomon saved two of four shots. Sophie McVicar scored Calais’ goal with Lauren Cook coming up with 11 saves on 26 shots.
Houlton boys 3, Calais 0 — At Calais Friday, Keegan Gentle tallied two goals and Nick Perfitt added one to lift Houlton past Calais. Keegan Gentle scored the first two goals in the eighth and 15th minutes of the second half on assists from Alex Wilde and Zach Fitzpatrick. Nick Perfitt added a goal with six minutes left in the game on a corner kick from Abe Lorom.
Houlton’s AJ Henderson had three saves on three shots, while Calais keeper Cody Pellerin stopped 18 of 25 shots. The Shires improved to 2-0 with the win, while Calais dropped to 1-1-1.
Katahdin girls 7, East Grand 0 — At Stacyville Friday, the Cougars (1-1) recorded the shutout as Katahdin junior Erin Lake scored five goals to lead the way. Danielle Libby and Lindsay Drew each had one goal. Emma McNally had two assists, while Savannah O’Hara added one.
Senior Natalie Rickards had three saves, while 8th grader Nakita Keim had two saves for Katahdin as the two shared time in goal. Jordan Cowger had 13 saves on 29 shots for East Grand (0-2).
Katahdin boys 2, East Grand 0 — At Stacyville Friday, the Katahdin boys completed the sweep of East Grand with a 2-0 shutout. Bradley Hotham scored two first-half goals that stood up as Katahdin improved to (1-1). East Grand dropped to 0-2.
Rigoberto Otero assisted on one of the goals for Katahdin. Tanner Lane had six saves on eight shots. Brady McEwen compiled seven saves on 16 shots for the Vikings.
Presque Isle girls 4, Maine Central Institute 0 — Junior Madison Michaud scored all four goals as the Wildcats (3-0) breezed past the Pittsfield-based Huskies (1-2), a new opponent out of the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference. The match was played Saturday afternoon at the Johnson Athletic Complex in Presque Isle.
“Madison was doing what Madison does — score goals,” said PI coach Ralph Michaud. “We played lackluster in the first half but played incredibly inspired in the second half.”
Emily Wheaton had two assists and Elizabeth Collins one for the Wildcats. Goalkeeper Savannah Rodriguez saved five of eight shots for her second shutout.
Presque Isle boys 3, MCI 2 — Also on Saturday in PI, the Wildcats broke a tie thanks to a penalty kick by Randon Mortland with just under six minutes remaining. Griffin Guerrette and Connor DeMerchant had Presque Isle’s other goals, with Zech Morse and Ryle Mortland contributing assists. Hayden Caldwell and Devon Varney scored goals for 1-2 MCI.
Ashland girls 3, Southern Aroostook 0 — The Hornet girls moved to 6-0 at home Saturday by getting past the Warriors. Morgan Doughty, Shelby Stolze and Willow Hall scored goals and Megan Cote (four saves on six shots) recorded the shutout in goal. The Warriors’ record dropped to 1-1.
Ashland boys 8, Southern Aroostook 0 — The Hornets won for just the second time this season thanks to an offensive explosion against the visiting Warriors Saturday. Parker O’Clair powered Ashland (2-3-1) with three goals and Alex Kaiser netted two. Mason Deabay also scored, while both Mason Moro and Brady Holmes provided their first career goals. SA in now 0-2.
Houlton golf 183, Hermon 188, Ellsworth 211 — At Hermon Friday, the Shires improved to 7-0 on the season beating both Hermon and Ellsworth. Houlton has a key matchup with Mattanawcook Academy Monday.
Houlton scores from Friday’s meet were: Drew Marino, 47; Nick Brewer, 46; Wyatt Harvey, 45; Isaac Vega, 45; and Sidney Lorom, 55.
Scores for Ellsworth were: Austin Baron, 49; Devin Grindle, 54; Keegan Grey, 54; Riley Grindle, 54.
Scores for Hermon were: Kent Johnson, 45; Matt Stonza, 46; Nate Allain, 47; Peter Dunphy, 51; and Adam Rush, 50.
“We had to stop once due to lightning and start again and the scores reflect it,” Houlton coach Dave Grant said.
Carlisle golf 194, Foxcroft Academy 219, PVHS 227 — At Barnes Brook Golf Course in Enfield Friday, Carlisle was able to get past both Foxcroft and the host PVHS Howlers. Sumner was the fourth team scheduled to be involved but did not show up and took the forfeit.
Three players shot in the 40s for Carlisle, with Seth Roy leading the way with a 47. Libby Boone carded a 48 and Isaac Madore a 49 for the winners, now 6-4.
Mackenzie Plourde of PVHS shot a 40 to grab medalist honors.
