Gardens need care in the fall, too, and Linda Trickey will provide a special presentation at the Walter T. A. Hansen Memorial Library on Saturday, Sept. 17, with timely information.
Her talk on “Putting Your Garden to Bed” begins at 10 a.m.
The library has also been “rocking” the scavenger hunt trend with “Our Library Rocks.” Colorfully painted rocks are hidden around town for others to find. Finders are asked to post a picture on the library’s website or on Facebook, and then take the rock to hide somewhere else. Happy hunting.
Toddler Time is on Tuesdays at 10, and the library also is open for a Craft Club on Mondays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Bring your favorite cross stitch piece, knitting, crocheting or other craft to work on in the company of others.
An eye on health
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met Tuesday morning, Sept. 5, at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. The special speaker was local ophthalmologist David Nadeau, OD.
He showed slides and spoke about the structure of the eye, giving a timeline of typical vision and eye health changes. He also spoke about the issues and problems that usually happen in different age ranges.
He said regular eye exams can enable a doctor to find issues early, such as diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration and dry eye syndrome. Nadeau recommends that people: eat a balanced diet, don’t smoke, exercise regularly, drink plenty of water, wear sunglasses and a hat when outdoors, take breaks during prolonged near-vision activities and have an annual eye examination.
