From the Bunkers (week of September 13, 2017)

Last week was a quiet time at the Houlton Community Golf Club. Cooler and wet weather kept some golfers from the course. This week looks like a reverse in weather conditions. Many members are back at school jobs, so this could be a great time to get in a few rounds.

This Sunday we held our annual Cross Country Par 3 Scramble. Proceeds went to the 2017 Houlton High Project Grad committee. Seventeen four-person teams competed, using holes designed to be fun and challenging; like having to chip over and under some trees, playing over the pond on five, and several greens that sloped away from you.

Taking home the pies for first, (yes, I said pies, made by parents of the students. Thank you, parents) was the team of Brian Swallow, Brian Howe, Patrick Howe, and Garrett Perkins, shooting four under. Second place went to the team of Ray and Pam Mailman and Marty and Karen Bouchard, and third went to Skip and Mary Jane Cleary, and Steve and Zach Fitzpatrick.

Second and third place winners were determined by an exciting putting face off with four teams tied at 3 under. Two teams were eliminated after both Ray and Skip sank a bending twenty foot putt. Then, three tries later Ray was able to roll in a testy downhill ten footer to take second place. All had a great day of golf and barbecue dinner after. We wish to thank Bill and Nancy for the use of their grill.

Coming up on Sept. 16, we will host our annual Ryder Cup match with Mars Hill Country Club. We still need a couple players to sign up for our eight to 12 man team. Course will be closed from 7-11 a.m. Saturday.  Sunday matches will be at MHCC.

On Sept. 23, we will see the Elks Club Ryan Wright Memorial Scramble at 1 p.m. Call the pro shop to sign up for these events.

The Lakeside Restaurant is still humming  along. Plan now to have dinner at the club on October 20th when Paul LaPointe will again serenade the diners with songs from the 60’s to 80’s. It’s always a popular event with everyone. Call Nancy at 694-9494 to make your reservations.

Come on out to the course this this week and enjoy the weather.
