All five UMPI fall athletic teams were in action over the weekend, with the UMPI women’s soccer and golf teams playing at home, the men’s soccer team at Vermont, the cross country team at a meet in Bangor and the volleyball team in a tournament held in Standish.

UMPI women shut out UMM to take opener

Jordi Legassie scored off a Janae Libby assist in the 12th minute and Jess Dickison netted a goal later in the first half as the UMPI Owls notched a 2-0 home win over UM-Machias Sunday in its opening match of the season.

Owl goalkeeper Allie Lopez saved the only shot she faced. UMPI dominated with 15 shots and 10 corner kicks.

“As first games go, getting a positive result is always a good thing,” said UMPI coach Trevor Parent. “The team as a comprehensive unit did its job.”

Lyndon State blanks Owl men

The University of Maine at Presque Isle men’s soccer team was shut out for the third consecutive time Saturday, falling to Lyndon State at Lyndonville, Vermont, 4-0.

The Owls were outshot by a 26-9 margin. They trailed 2-0, but enjoyed a man advantage over the final 13 minutes due to a red card by a Lyndon State player. The hosts were still able to score two goals in the final six minutes to account for the final margin.

Matt Manter collected 11 saves for UMPI, which travels to Unity College Friday and then debuts at home Sunday against Fisher College. The match at Park Family Field begins at 2 p.m.

XC team competes in Bangor

Emmy Churchill’s first cross country race was a team-leading effort. The UMPI sophomore crossed the finish line in the Husson Harrier Invitational 5K race in 23 minutes and 53 seconds, which was good for a top-five performance. Kendra Silvers was second for the Owls and eighth overall in 24:57. UMPI did not figure in the team results as its fifth runner did not complete the course.

The men’s team competed in its first 8K of the fall and took third place in the standings. Jesus Gonzalez finished the race in 31:14 to lead the Owls. Connor Hrynuk came in at 31:19 and was second for UMPI.

The team next compete in the Pop Crowell Invitational at Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts, Saturday, Sept. 23.

Golf team hosts MMA

The UMPI Owls’ golf team played its first match of the season Saturday against Maine Maritime Academy at Presque Isle Country Club.

The Owls recorded a score of 416, which was 94 behind the victorious Mariners. Anthony Chacho shot a 91 and Matt Cauchon a 98 for UMPI.

The team returns to action Wednesday, Sept. 13, when it travels to Waterville Country Club to participate in the UM-Farmington Invitational.

Volleyball team goes 0-4 in tourney

The UMPI volleyball team lost four matches over the weekend but coach Jonathon Bowman is still pleased with the progress the squad is making.

The Owls competed in the St. Joseph’s College Autumn Invitational Friday and Saturday in Standish. They lost to host St. Joe’s, UMFK and Husson twice, but took games off both UMFK and Husson on Saturday.

“The team came together on the second day,” Bowman said. “Everyone stepped up to a higher level of competition to start realizing the potential of this team. Some of our opponents have already reached their potential. This team is just going to get better every week.”

Taylor Johnson was named to the all-tournament team.
