CARIBOU, Maine – Mary E. Day, 83, passed away on Monday, September 11, 2017, with her family by her side. She was born in Halcomb, New Brunswick, the daughter of Claude and Ignita (Taylor) Somers.

Mary was raised on the beautiful Miramichi River. After graduating from New Brunswick Bible Institute in 1956, Mary headed out to Western Canada to work with the Canadian Sunday school mission teaching children. She returned to New Brunswick to cook at New Brunswick Bible Institute where she met her husband Bob. Together they served the Lord faithfully in missions work and in giving. Mary worked for Dr. Paul Hamlin for many years and afterwards worked delivering Meals on Wheels in Presque Isle and on the paper assembly line at Northeast Publishing. She was a wonderful musician and loved playing piano, accordion and guitar even though she’d never had a lesson. For the past seven years she was a patient at the County Dialysis Center and her family is eternally thankful for the care she received there.
Mary is survived by her daughter Kim, and John Kiehn of Caribou, her siblings, Verne and Judy Somers of Newfoundland, Ella Takacs of Edmundton, Alberta, Hazel and John Bulman of Moncton, NB, and her grandchildren, Robbie, Jacob, Elyse and Kelsey Kiehn. In addition, she will be missed by many nieces and nephews and sister-in-laws Charlene (Chester) Gage, Leila Day, Ruby Day, Marcia Muldowney, and brother-in-law Clayton Day.
In addition to her parents, Mary was predeceased by her husband, Robert, infant children, David and Nathan, an infant sister, Claudia, her siblings, Virginia Hannah, and Ken Somers.
Friends and family may visit the Kiehn family at their residence of 35 Russ Street in Caribou from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday September 14, 2017 for a time of fellowship. A graveside service will be held on Friday, September 15, 2017 at 11 a.m. at the Maine Veterans Cemetery in Caribou, Rev. Dave Goupille officiating.
In Mary’s honor, her family is establishing a scholarship fund for students of the New Brunswick Bible Institute.
