Shire golfers fall for first time

HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton golf squad fell for the first time on the season, losing to Mattanawcook Academy Monday. The MA Lynx shot a team score of 170, while Houlton was eight strokes behind at 178. Penobscot Valley finished third with a 240.

With the loss, the Shires are now 8-1 on the season, but have been otherwise enjoying tremendous success on the course this fall.

Individual results for Houlton were: Drew Marino, 38; Nick Brewer, 41; Wyatt Harvey,44; Devin Ivey, 55; Isaac Vega, 58; Sydney Lorom, 59; and Carson Grant, 61.

MA results were: Logan Thompson, 36; Max Woodman, 36; Brandon Savage, 48; Duncan McIntyre, 50; and Tyler Arnold, 52. Penobscot Valley results were: Mckenzie Plourde, 48; Grant Kiden, 54; Kyle Grant, 68; and Nick Rhodes 70.

At Hermon Friday, the Shires pulled off a close victory over both Hermon and Ellsworth. Houlton shot a 183, while Hermon was second at 188 and Ellsworth third at 211.

Houlton scores from Friday’s meet were: Drew Marino, 47; Nick Brewer, 46; Wyatt Harvey, 45; Isaac Vega, 45; and Sidney Lorom, 55.

Scores for Ellsworth were: Austin Baron, 49; Devin Grindle, 54; Keegan Grey, 54; Riley Grindle, 54.

Scores for Hermon were: Kent Johnson, 45; Matt Stonza, 46; Nate Allain, 47; Peter Dunphy, 51; and Adam Rush, 50.  

“We had to stop once due to lightning and start again and the scores reflect it,” Houlton coach Dave Grant said.

In other golfing action, Hodgdon hosted Ashland at the Houlton Community Golf Course Monday in a makeup match. The Hawks were victorious 220-237. Results for Hodgdon were Andrew Tuttle, 49; Bryon Barton, 54; Justin Wilson, 56; and Nathan Tuttle, 61.

For Ashland, Graham Barry shot a 52 followed by Jack Routhier, 62; Sean Montpetit, 60; Tristan Pelletier, 63; and Kolson Condon, 64.
