Three local soccer teams unbeaten

The Central Aroostook boys and Ashland and Presque Isle girls were still undefeated heading into this week’s varsity action on the soccer field. PI traveled to Caribou Tuesday for a matchup between teams combining on a 7-0 record (3-0 for the Wildcats, 4-0 for the Vikings).

The boys’ version of the rivalry game is set for Wednesday, Sept. 13, in Caribou beginning at 7 p.m.

Last Wednesday and Thursday’s schedule was limited due to the rainy weather and wet fields, but there were still plenty of matches played last week in the region from Sept. 5-11.

Summaries of those contests follow:

Easton girls 3, Washburn 3 — Delia Bonner scored twice for the Bears and Madison Miller netted a pair of goals for the Beavers as the teams settled for a draw in a game played in Washburn Monday.

Miller’s second goal of the game with 10:59 left in the second half capped the scoring and allowed the Beavers (4-2-2) to knot the score. Kassie Farley had Washburn’s other goal, while Isabelle Morin notched a goal for Easton (1-6-2).

Easton boys 2, Washburn 1 — The Bears moved to 5-3-1 and the Beavers’ record fell to 0-8 following the match in Washburn Monday. Jovanni Taveras had the Beavers’ goal three minutes into the game, while Collin Sotomayor and Isaac Currier scored Easton’s goals in the second half.

Kody Carter was the winning goalie and Josh Jackson handled the duties for the Beavers.

Fort Fairfield girls 2, Van Buren 2 — Two winless teams remain that way after the Tigers and Crusaders played to a draw in a make-up contest Monday evening. Fort Fairfield is now 0-6-1 and Van Buren stands at 0-4-1. Individual scoring was not reported.

Fort Fairfield boys 8, Van Buren 1 — Scoring balance was the key in the Tigers’ home win Monday over the Crusaders. Seven different players had goals, with Chris Gill notching two and Isaac Cyr, Jared Harvey, Jonah Daigle, Lorenzo Viano, Alex Sprague and Kobe West all tallying single goals. Fort Fairfield’s record climbed to 5-2.

Matt Burgess netted a first-half goal for the 2-4 Crusaders.

Presque Isle girls 4, Maine Central Institute 0 — Junior Madison Michaud scored all four goals as the Wildcats (3-0) breezed past the Pittsfield-based Huskies (1-2), a new opponent out of the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference. The match was played Saturday afternoon at the Johnson Athletic Complex in Presque Isle.

“Madison was doing what Madison does — score goals,” said PI coach Ralph Michaud. “We played lackluster in the first half but played incredibly inspired in the second half.”

Emily Wheaton had two assists and Elizabeth Collins one for the Wildcats. Goalkeeper Savannah Rodriguez saved five of eight shots for her second shutout.

Presque Isle boys 3, MCI 2 — Also on Saturday in PI, the Wildcats broke a tie thanks to a penalty kick by Randon Mortland with just under six minutes remaining. Griffin Guerrette and Connor DeMerchant had Presque Isle’s other goals, with Zech Morse and Ryle Mortland contributing assists. Hayden Caldwell and Devon Varney scored goals for 1-2 MCI.

Ashland girls 3, Southern Aroostook 0 — The Hornet girls moved to 6-0 at home Saturday by getting past the Warriors. Morgan Doughty, Shelby Stolze and Willow Hall scored goals and Megan Cote (four saves on six shots) recorded the shutout in goal. The Warriors’ record dropped to 1-1.

Ashland boys 8, Southern Aroostook 0 — The Hornets won for just the second time this season thanks to an offensive explosion against the visiting Warriors Saturday. Parker O’Clair powered Ashland (2-3-1) with three goals and Alex Kaiser netted two. Mason Deabay also scored, while both Mason Moro and Brady Holmes provided their first career goals. SA in now 0-2.

Central Aroostook girls 12, Easton 4 — Kate Levesque scored four goals, Kassie Levesque and Kayla Martin netted two each and Libby Grass, Brooke Blackstone, Brea Bradbury and Amy Gerritsen each had one as the Panthers moved to 4-3 Friday in a match played in Mars Hill. For the Bears, who dropped to 1-6-1, Isabelle Morin notched a hat trick and Lydia Ferris had a single goal.

Central Aroostook boys 5, Easton 1 — The Panthers are a perfect 7-0 after winning the home match Friday. Hunter Wardwell was dominant offensively as he scored four of his team’s five goals. Ben Thomas had the other. Brayden Bradbury was the winning goalkeeper with four saves on 10 shots. Collin Sotomayor scored for the Bears, who dropped to 4-3. Kody Carter saved three of 18 shots.

Fort Kent boys 3, Presque Isle 2 — In one of the few games played Thursday, Niko Naranja snapped a tie with his goal 6:24 into the second half as the Fort Kent Warriors defeated Presque Isle 3-2 at the Johnson Athletic Complex.

Fort Kent’s Noah Martin scored on a penalty kick to give his team the early lead before Gage LeTourneau and Guerrette answered with goals for Presque Isle. Martin knotted the score prior to intermission before Naranja’s game-winner.

The Warriors improved to 3-1 with the victory.

Reece Pelletier made some brilliant saves and was the winning goalkeeper and Jason Dumais handled the duties for the Wildcats.

Presque Isle girls 3, Fort Kent 1 — Wildcats were able to come up with a 3-1 victory over Fort Kent last Wednesday.

It was the first home match of the season for the Presque Isle girls. The Wildcats scored three first-half goals, two by Michaud and the other by Eleanor St. Peter, while limiting Fort Kent to a second-half goal by freshman Gabby Martin.

Clara Kohlbacher and Paige McHatten had assists for PI and Rodriguez saved nine of 10 shots for PI. Desirae Hafford assisted on Martin’s goal and FK goalkeeper Lyndsay Ouellette collected 15 saves while facing 18 shots. The Warriors are now 2-2.

Madawaska girls 4, Central Aroostook 3 — At Madawaska on Sept. 5, all the scoring took place in the first half and the hosts took a 3-0 lead 24 minutes in before the Panthers battled back. Levesque scored at the 15:10 mark and teammate Kayla Martin netted a goal less than five minutes later to allow CA to get within a goal. The Owls’ Hannah Nadeau then scored her second goal before Levesque broke through with 4:50 to play before intermission, but the match was scoreless the rest of the way.

Cassidy Beaulieu made nine saves on 12 shots in goal for 4-1 Madawaska and Macey Coffin and Caitlyn Harris combined for eight saves on 12 shots for Central Aroostook.

Easton boys 6, Wisdom 0 — On Sept. 5, Kyle Flewelling scored two goals, while Sotomayor, Camden Michaud, Isaac Currier and Owen Nicholson added one each as the Bears blanked the Pioneers in St. Agatha. Kooper Kinney, Seth Faloon and Gavin Pangburn contributed assists and Carter needed to make just four saves for his second shutout of the season.

“We really moved the ball pretty well and kept the pace pretty high,” said Bears’ coach Ryan Shaw. “We are just working at being consistent as we gain more experience.”

Wisdom girls 6, Easton 0 — Also at St. Agatha, Breanna Lavoie notched three goals, Bailey Bellefleur added two, and Kaitlyn Chasse had one as the Pioneers are now 5-2.

Central Aroostook boys 3, Madawaska 2 — On Sept. 5, the Panthers stayed unbeaten as they edged the Owls in a battle of two of the top teams in Class D, played at Madawaska. It was just the second loss suffered by the Owls in five matches. Individual scoring information was not reported.
