Two days after suffering its first loss of the season, the Houlton golf team got back to its winning form Wednesday in a match with Carlisle and John Bapst.
Played at the Presque Isle Country Club, Houlton picked up the nine-stroke victory over Carlisle (Caribou-Presque Isle) as the Shires fired a 173 on the day, compared to a 182 for the hosts. John Bapst finished with a 217.
Houlton’s Drew Marino was medalist on the day as he shot 38 over nine holes.
Other Shire results were: Wyatt Harvey 41; Isaac Vega 46; Nick Brewer 48; Devin Ivey 49; Sydney Lorom 53; Rhetta Vega 60; and Carson Grant 62.
Results for Carlisle golfers were: Seth Roy 41; Gabe Rand 45; Libby Boone 46; Noah Rosado 50; Isaac Madore 53; Andrew Evans 54; and Alex Cyr 59. Scoring for John Bapst were: Jerry Hung 48; Cameron Breen 52; David Fernandez 58; Sam Yoo 59; Cameron Ashe 62; Nate Mushlit 66; and Crystal Bell 67.
Houlton record is now 10-1 on the season, while Carlisle drops to 7-5 and John Bapst is 4-7.
Central Aroostook picked up an 8-3 victory over Hodgdon behind Shane Stackpole, who was the medalist with a 44. Tyson Cyr had a 51, Stetson Nicholas came in with a 53 and Taia Tilley carded a 63 for the victorious Panthers.
Results for Hodgdon: Justin Wilson 50, Bryan Barton 53, Andrew Tuttle 54; and Nathan Tuttle 67.
Ashland nipped Southern Aroostook, 5-4, for its first victory of the season. Hunter Walker of SA was the medalist with a 54 and Graham Berry finished with a 61 for the Hornets.
In golf Thursday, Sept. 14, Hodgdon travels to Portage Hills Country Club to take on the Hornets in a match beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Ashland, Hodgdon, Southern Aroostook and Central Aroostook will play in the Aroostook League championships Monday, Sept. 18 beginning at 8 a.m. at Mars Hill Country Club. The event serves as a qualifier for the upcoming state tournaments at Natanis Golf Club in Vassalboro in October.
The top two teams will advance to the team championships Oct. 7 and the boys with a score of 90 or better and the girls with a 110 or better will move on to the individual championships Oct. 14.
In soccer action Thursday, Sept. 14, the Fort Fairfield girls and boys make the short trip to Easton to play the Bears at 3:30 p.m. and the MSSM teams will play their second matches of the season in St. Agatha against the Wisdom Pioneers. Both the boys and girls matches kick off at 4 p.m.

Presque Isle boys 1, Caribou 0 — At Caribou, Randon Mortland’s penalty kick three minutes into the second half stood up as the only goal of the match, leading Presque Isle to a 1-0 victory over Caribou in a Class B North battle played at Caribou High School.
The Wildcats have now won two in a row after a home loss to Fort Kent Sept. 7.
“We seemed to be working together much better,” said Presque Isle coach Joe Greaves. “Having new faces in new positions, the guys just have to get a feel for what the other is doing. It seemed like when we lost to Fort Kent, we were all doing our own thing out there, so the biggest thing right now is getting everyone on the same page.”
Jason Dumais turned away nine of 13 shots for PI (3-1) and Noah Hixon made 10 saves on 17 shots for Caribou (2-2).
Katahdin girls 3 , Washburn 0 — At Stacyville Wednesday, Katahdin junior Erin Lake had two unassisted goals and eighth grader Emily Byers had a solo goal, assisted by sophomore Savannah O’hara as the Cougars were victorious.
Senior goalie Natalie Rickards had four saves and freshman Nakita Keim had three saves for the Cougars (2-1-1).
Carly Bragg had 10 saves for Washburn (4-3-2).
Katahdin boys 3 Washburn 2 — At Stacyville Wednesday, Garrett Hamm scored what proved to be the go ahead goal with 24 minutes left in the second half as the Cougars edged Washburn. Hamm also had a first-half assist. Bradley Hotham also chipped in with an assist.
Bryce Sinclair and Caleb Giles scored the other two goals for the Cougars (2-2). Tanner Lane made four saves on nine shots.
Devon Maynard and Konner Jordan scored the two goals for Washburn (0-9), while Josh Jackson made nine saves on 15 shots.
Woodland boys 8, East Grand 1 — At Baileyville Wednesday, Drew Hayward connected for five goals and set up another as the Dragons beat the Vikings. Ethan Cilley posted a hat trick with an assist, while Sabre Phelps and Gavin Gardner added assists for 3-0 Woodland.
Thomas Gilman scored the lone goal for East Grand (2-2).
