100 Years Ago – Sept. 19, 1917
Retires — A complimentary banquet was tendered Harry Little who retires as Asst. Postmaster, Oct. 1 by his associates, on Friday evening when he was presented with a gold watch.
Monument — The Houlton Granite and Marble Works erected a large and beautiful monument on the Hunter lot in Hodgdon last week.
75 Years Ago – Sept. 17, 1942
Attend meeting — Frank W. Hussey, president of Maine Potato Growers, Inc., announced today that H. E. Bryant, General Manager, of the local cooperative would leave this weekend for Washington to attend a special meeting of the board of directors of the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives to consider agricultural price ceilings.
Knitting needed — All persons who have Red Cross knitting are asked to complete the articles at once and take or send them to the Red Cross rooms as soon as possible.
50 Years Ago – Sept. 20 , 1967
Gift to Ricker — The Ricker College Capital Fund Campaign has now reached a total of $272,000 due to a challenge grant of $5,000 received today from the CIT Corporation, New York City. Robert L. Murphy, representative of the Tuition Plan, Inc., a CIT subsidiary, presented the check to Ricker officials Charles W. Heath, treasurer, and David H. Cotton, dean of instruction.
Study abroad — James Kitchen Archibald, son of Justice and Mrs. James P. Archibald and the grandson of Bernard Archibald, a past district governor of Rotary International, has been selected by Rotary International to receive a Rotary Foundation Graduate Fellowship for study at the University of Lille, France, for the academic year 1968-69. He is the first suggested recipient presented for consideration by the Houlton Rotary Club to receive such an honor.
25 Years Ago – Sept. 16, 1992
New EMTs — More than a dozen new emergency medical technicians have graduated from training programs in Island Falls and serve as volunteer drivers for the town’s Ambulance Service, according to Faye Drew of the service. The new EMTs are: Doug Grant, Tammy Farwell, Bob King, Trish King, Faye Drew, Vincent McBreairty, Mary Grant, Kenny Crandall, ‘Otis’ Dan Brooks, Royden Hunt, Spencer Carr, Richard Carr, Patty Hartkin, Kevin Schmidt, Lisa Cates and Arthur Martin.
Grand opening — Don’s Flies and Rods held a grand opening recently as the store has been moved from Market Square to Court Street. On hand at the opening was Senator Margaret Ludwig who congratulated Don Marley.
