Wildflowers — Miss Lilias Grave presented the Presque Isle Free Library with specimens of mounted wildflowers from South Dakota, Montana and Illinois, to form the nucleus of a collection of wildflowers which, with hope, will in time assume large proportions and contain many if not all of the wildflowers of our own state. Such contributions always gratefully accepted by the library Association, and possess a real educational value.

Insurance rep — F. H. Plummer of Portland, representing the Vermont Mutual Ins. Co., was in town looking after insurance of potatoes in this section.

Cobbler Jackpot — Edward Hews, president of the local Chapter of Future Farmers of America and son of Mrs. Ray Hews, harvested 205 barrels of certified Cobblers from one measured acre, a record yield for this season.

2411 tons of scrap — A total of 2,411 tons of scrap metal, or 55 pounds for every man, woman and child in Aroostook County, was collected by the major towns of Aroostook in a scrap harvest, the Maine Salvage Committee reported. The returns available did not include comple returns from Limestone. The tremendous scrap harvest, according to the Salvage Committee, exceeded all expectations and was 1,041 tons more than the quota given to the County in advances by the State Salvage Committee. Aroostook Salvage Committees had been given a quota of 500 pounds per farm for the County’s 6,000 farms, but the County averaged 947 pounds per farm against this quota.

FFA winning display — The Presque Isle Chapter Future Farmers of America had on display a safety exhibit in the Howes Youth Building on the Eastern States Exposition ground in east Springfield, Mass. The exhibit displayed a second-place ribbon which the chapter won in competition with the chapters of the New England States and New York. The exhibit also placed first at the Northern Maine Fair. It featured five safety “mock-ups” on a turntable connected to a relay and delay switch which stopped the table so that the observer can read the information on the backboard which is pointed out by an electric light.

Newly elected — Thomas Sweetser, of Presque Isle, elected vice president of the newly-organized Maine Association of Cooperative Extension Service Faculty. Also elected were Mary Donnini of Falmouth, Peggy Schomaker of Orono, Betty Syvinski of Alfred, all vice presidents; Rita Ridgway of Lewiston, secretary; Whitney Hodgkins of Augusta, president; and Durwood Gray of Machias, treasurer.
