Four girls and four boys Class D soccer matchups involving teams from the region will be played Thursday, Sept. 21.
Van Buren, Mars Hill, Ashland and Fort Kent will all host girls’ contest at 5 p.m., followed by boys’ games under the lights at 7 p.m.
The Crusaders, coming off Tuesday’s home sweep of Easton, will entertain the Fort Fairfield Tigers. The teams squared off in Fort Fairfield Sept. 11, with the girls’ contest finishing in a tie and the boys’ game going to FF by an 8-1 final.
The Van Buren girls bring a 1-6-1 record into this match, while the Tiger girls stand at 0-8-1. They are 13th and 17th, respectively, in the Class D North Heal Point standings. On the boys’ side, Van Buren has won three of its last four games and enter in sixth place in Class D North with a 4-4 mark, while Fort Fairfield has won six straight and is 7-2 overall, placing them in second in the rankings.
In Mars Hill, Central Aroostook hosts Washburn. The Panther girls and boys both beat the Beavers in Washburn way back on Aug. 11. The girls’ squads are close in the standings, with Washburn in fourth place at 4-4-2 and CA right behind in fifth with a 4-3 mark. The Panther boys are one of just two undefeated teams in Class D North and are in first place at 7-0, while the Beavers are still looking for their first win after an 0-10 start.
The Ashland Hornets will take on Katahdin. The Hornet girls are 7-0 and in second place in the division. They take on the 2-2-1 Cougars, who currently sit in ninth place. The Ashland boys are 2-4-1 and in ninth place, while their opponent holds a 2-3 mark and is in 17th. The teams meet again on Katahdin’s home field on Oct. 3.
In Class C North, Houlton travels to Fort Kent to take on the Warriors in both boys and girls soccer matches involving teams at or near the top of the division. The Houlton girls 6-0 on the season and are the top-ranked squad in the region. Fort Kent, with a 4-2 record, is currently fourth. The Warrior boys, with a 4-1-1 record, are in first place in Class C North, while Houlton is in fourth place with a 3-1-1 record.
In soccer action Wednesday in Eastport, the Southern Aroostook girls squad defeated Shead 8-0 as Kassidy Mathers scored the hat trick with three goals. Emma Nadeau added two goals, while Kylie Vining, Kacy Daggett and Hannah Brown each had solo goals.
Sydney Brewer made two saves on two shots in net for the Warriors, who improved to 5-1 with the victory. Shead falls to 3-3 with the loss.
In the boys game, Shead was victorious 11-1 as Damien Lank scored five goals. C.J. Francis added three goals and Austin Ashby had two. The final goal scorer for Shead was not reported. Hunter Walker tallied the lone goal for Southern Aroostook.
Francis and Lank shared net duties for the Tigers and combined for six saves on seven shots. Steven Rackliff had 25 saves on 38 shots for SA.
The Warriors fall to 0-5 on the season, while Shead improves to 4-1.
On the golf course, Carlisle took on Mattanawcook Academy, Greenville and Bucksport at JaTo Highlands in Lincoln Wednesday. Carlisle beat Greenville, but lost by a stroke to Bucksport and by 11 strokes to host MA.
Gabe Rand led Carlisle with a 43 and Seth Roy followed with a 44. Noah Rosado carded a 47 and Andrew Evans had a 49 for Carlisle’s total of 183 strokes. Logan Thompson of Mattanawcook was the medalist with a 36. Carlisle’s record is now 9-10 on the season.
