PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The annual Presque Isle Elks Lodge 1954 Soccer Shoot is set for Sunday, Sept. 24, beginning at 10 a.m. at the University of Maine at Presque Isle athletic fields.

There is no fee to participate and the competition is open to any area youth under 14 years of age as of Aug. 1. Boys and girls age divisions are under-8, 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13. Winners and runners-up in each division will receive a trophy.

Winners are eligible to compete in the Elks District Soccer Shoot in Bangor Oct. 8.

Contestants in the under-8 and 8-9 age group have three tries to kick a soccer ball through each of the five different-size goals, ranging from 48 inches wide down to 17, with increasing points awarded for successful kicks through the smallest-size goals.

In the two older age categories, 10-11 and 12-13, contestants will attempt 15 penalty kicks from a distance of 36 feet from the goal, with more points being awarded to kicks in the quadrants of the goal toughest to defend, namely the corners.

Grilled hot dogs, drinks and chips will be served free of charge to all contestants and their families.
