The UMPI men’s soccer team put an end to a four-match losing streak to begin the season Sunday, Sept. 17, topping Fisher College, 1-0, in Presque Isle.
Sean Barbosa, a senior from Caribou, scored off a pass from Ansumana Morrow, a freshman from Presque Isle, with just over three minutes remaining in the first half for the lone goal of the match.
Matt Manter, a senior from Caribou, made five saves for the shutout.
On Friday, Sept. 15, Chris Udobe, a freshman from Nigeria, gave UMPI an early advantage with a goal off a Barbosa assist, but host Unity proceeded to score three unanswered goals in the 3-1 victory.
UMPI plays UM-Machias in another home game this Friday beginning at 3 p.m.
Women’s soccer team loses to Fisher
The Owl women dropped a 7-0 decision to Fisher College Sunday, evening the team’s record at 1-1.
Julia Schojan netted five goals for the Falcons, who led 3-0 at halftime.
“Soccer has a way of humbling decent teams in a hurry,” said UMPI coach Trevor Parent. “We had a very good run of play in the first half hour, but we let in three quick ones to end the half. Our mental resolve wasn’t up to par.”
UMPI hosts UM-Farmington Saturday at 1 p.m. in its next match.
UMPI volleyball team splits
Coach Jonathon Bowman’s Owl volleyball team made the trip to Leicester, Massachusetts, Saturday and beat the hosts, Becker College, before losing to Albertus Magnus College.
The Owls picked up a 3-1 victory over Becker behind Miranda Washinawatok, a freshman from Shawano, Wisconsin, who led the way with 16 kills. Taylor Johnson, a freshman from Eagle, Idaho, had 15 kills and eight digs and Maddi Thweatt, a freshman from Middleton, Idaho, contributed 10 kills and five digs. Laura Aroz, a sophomore from Tucson, Arizona, recorded 38 assists.
In the 3-1 loss to Albertus Magnus, Thweatt had 10 kills and 11 digs and Washinawatok eight kills. Hannah Williams, a junior from Park Falls, Nova Scotia, led an impressive defensive effort with 34 digs.
