HOULTON, Maine — Interest in serving on the Houlton Town Council appears to be high as six candidates have come forward for three available seats.
The same does not ring true for the RSU 29 board of directors as just two individuals have expressed interest. There are three available seats on the school board.
Friday was the deadline for nomination papers to be returned and according to Houlton Town Clerk and Interim Town Manager Cathy O’Leary, six individuals successfully gathered enough signatures to have their names appear on the ballot in November for the town council.
The candidates for the three available council seats (three-year terms) include incumbents Jane Torres and Chris Robinson, as well as Susan Tortello, Edward Lake, Halston Britton and Robert Monroe. Tortello served on the council from 2009-2014. Councilors may only serve two consecutive three-year terms due to term limits.
For the RSU 29 school board, Darryl Scott White and Susan McLaughlin are seeking re-election. Each of the three available seats on the board are for three-year terms.
Two candidates — Richard Goodwin and Galen Hogan — have emerged for two available seats on the board of directors for the Houlton Water Company.
There are three available seats for three-year positions on the town’s board of budget review, but just one individual — David Gates — filed nomination papers. A two-year and one-year term also are available with no candidates.
Iva Sussman is the lone candidate running for a five-year term on the Cary Library Board of Trustees.
