OLD TOWN, Maine — A Houlton ambulance, transporting a patient to the Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, struck a moose Friday evening on Interstate-95 near the Alton Bog.

According to Ambulance Director Milton Cone, the accident occurred around 5:15 p.m. Friday evening as ambulance personnel were traveling south on Interstate-95 in one of the agencies four vehicles.

“The ambulance struck a moose that had entered the road from the right-hand side, colliding with the passenger side of the vehicle,” Cone said. “The impact took out the headlight and bumper, and one of the antlers smashed through the windshield.”

The passenger seat was empty at the time of the crash as the second paramedic was in the back of the ambulance with the patient. There were no injuries from the collision.

An ambulance from Old Town was dispatched to pick up the patient and continue the transfer to EMMC. The ambulance was picked up by Autotronics in Bangor for repairs.

Houlton leases four ambulances from Autotronics, with three vehicles stored at the town’s public safety building. The fourth vehicle is stationed at the Autotronics facility in Bangor, which according to Cone, has worked out favorably for the Houlton department.
