115 Years Ago – Sept. 23, 1902
Back in style — The are about 12 hours of daylight now, the sun rising at 5:50 and setting at 5:54. Fur coats and mittens are back in style again. And there is still quite a bit of grain left to be harvested and teams are also hauling potatoes to market.
100 Years Ago – Sept. 27, 1917
Move — N.A. Currier has moved from his home on School Street into a rent over the Pattee Co.’s store.
Big shift — A shift must come in Aroostook farming during the next few years. We are informed that the new prices on fertilizer will be something like $56 a ton for no-potash fertilizer and $74 for 4-percent potash fertilizer.
75 Years Ago – Sept. 23, 1942
Plane crash kills 14 — Fourteen men were killed when two Army planes crashed in two different areas of northern Aroostook Tuesday morning, amid “limited visibility.” Each plane carried two officers and five enlisted men who were on routine flights, according to statements from headquarters at the Presque Isle Army base. One crash occurred near the W.F. Campbell farm on the East Presque Isle road, the other on a ride six miles in the woods from the H.A. Soucia and Sons farm in Perham. Army officers in charge at both accidents expressed their appreciation to the Civilian Defense Groups for assistance rendered.
Article — Lloyd H. Berrie, M.D., Caribou eye, ear, nose and throat specialist, was recently honored by a publication of an article written by him in the journal of the Maine Medical Association. The paper was written on subjects pertaining to common diseases of the nose and ear.
50 Years Ago – Sept. 27, 1967
Expansion proposals — The building committee at Cary Memorial Hospital has won approval from the Town Council for a $1,500,000 bond issue referendum question on the Dec. 12 ballot. Cary has, in two previous public releases, set forth reasons and needs for expansion and renovation of its facilities, including the x-ray department, physical therapy department, outpatient services, nursing stations and more. The Dec. 12 referendum, if approved by voters, would enable the hospital to apply for Hill Burton funds in January.
Shorter drive — The drive south from Caribou is about to get shorter with the new section of Interstate 95 opening up from Medway to Oakfield. Roadside rest areas are planned for future construction at this location. The highway will be open from Houlton to Kittery this fall.
25 Years Ago – Sept. 23, 1992
McKernan visit and walk — Gov. John R. McKernan Jr. walked through downtown Caribou Thursday afternoon as part of the Capital for a Day program. The governor and his entourage walked from the Caribou Savings & Loan Association building at the end of High Street and continued along Sweden Street to Tibbets TV & Appliance store. McKernan stopped to talk with merchants and residents along the way.
Vets gather — Members of local veterans organizations assembled at the Caribou Veterans Honor Roll on national POW-MIA Day last Friday evening to remember the military people who are being held as prisoners of war or missing in action. Guests attending the ceremony include Korean War vet. George Berube, Rep. Wilfred Bell, both of Caribou, and post commander of the Stockholm American Legion, Gary Kelly.
