100 Years Ago – Sept. 26, 1917

    Business trip  Mrs. Cora M. Putnam returned home Saturday from a trip to Boston on Red Cross business.

    Meeting Editors C. A. Lyons of the Aroostook Pioneer and C. H. Fogg of the Houlton Times were in Ft. Fairfield last Friday to attend the semi-annual meeting of the Aroostook Press Assn.

75 Years Ago – Sept. 24, 1942

    Rally Houlton’s second War Bond rally of the month was held in Market Square Tuesday evening under the sponsorship of the Chester L. Briggs Post, American Legion, in conjunction with Motion Picture Industry’s ‘Salute to Our Heroes Month.’  Although the attendance was not so large as at the rally held earlier in the month, $8,025 worth of War Bonds and Stamps sold through local theatres this far this month to $19,279.

    New patrolman arrives Mr. and Mrs. Frank Harriman of Woodland have moved to Island Falls. They are living in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Emerson. Mr. Harriman is State Police officer in this section.

50 Years Ago – Sept. 27 , 1967

    Interstate open As National Highway Week is observed in Maine, the State Highway Commission is putting the final touches on the 41 miles of Interstate 95 that it plans to put into operation this fall. The new section will close the gap between Medway and Oakfield, making it possible for the motorist in Maine to use 300 miles of expressways in a continuous line between Kittery and Houlton.

    To teach John Dickison has completed his courses at the IBM Center in Boston and has accepted a position as head of the data processing department at Beal’s College in Bangor.

25 Years Ago – Sept. 23, 1992

   Appointed director Houlton native Susan Bell has held important positions in her life, like her four terms as a representative in the State House and as the deputy commissioner of the state Department of Conservation, but last Friday she was appointed to a bigger and more historic one. Starting Oct. 19 she will be the director of the Bureau of Forestry, the first woman in the state’s history to run it.

   10 years — Kendall’s Jewelry is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Owner Ken Carson operates stores in Houlton and Calais. Between them, the two locations have more than 4,000 square feet of selling space, with 30 showcases and 18 wallcases of jewelry, giftware and luggage.
