Wednesday will be a relatively quiet day for soccer squads with only a handful of games on tap. Today’s slate sees the Caribou boys making the trip to Dover-Foxcroft to take on the Foxcroft Academy Ponies for a 4 p.m. start, the Hodgdon boys and girls travel to Katahdin for 3:30 p.m. games, while Houlton hosts Mattanawcook Academy (5 p.m. girls/6:30 p.m. boys).
The following is a recap of games and matches held Tuesday.
Presque Isle girls 4, Ellsworth 0 — After having lost two in a row, the Wildcats bounced back on the road Tuesday with the shutout win over the Eagles.
Junior Eleanor St. Peter scored on a direct kick from 25 yards out to open the scoring, while junior Madison Michaud followed by netting a pair of goals, one off a Clara Kohlbacher assist and the other from St. Peter.
Mackenzie Turner then converted a Libby Moreau pass for the final goal of the match. Savannah Rodriguez recorded five saves and defenders Chrissy Skidgel, Charlotte Carrier, Liz Collins, Molly Kingsbury, Lydia Miller, Emma Kohlbacher and Jenna Sargent also played a large role in the team’s second shutout of the season.
“It was another very good team win, with all the players contributing,” said PI coach Ralph Michaud, whose team’s record improved to 5-2. Ellsworth’s record fell to 2-6 with the loss.
Woodland boys 4, East Grand 1 — At Danforth Tuesday, the Vikings fell to Woodland 4-1. Individual results were not reported. Woodland improves to 6-1-1, while East Grand falls to 2-6 on the season.
Cross Country
The Houlton Cross Country squad competed in a small meet Tuesday at Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln. Houlton did not have enough runners to score as a team in either the boys or girls competitions, but did log strong individual efforts.“We had several athletes walk away with hardware from this small school meet,” explained Houlton coach Chris Rines.
Joel Bond of Hodgdon claimed his first victory of the 2017 season with a strong performance, completing the race in 17 minutes, 50.82 seconds. Bond finished nearly two minutes ahead of the second-place finisher (Josh Burris of MA, 19:42.20).
The top Shiretowner for the boys was Jeremy Cook, who placed fifth with a personal best time of 20:16. Ean Bolstridge (27:00.6) and Nolan Jacobs (27:27.45) came in 8th and 9th place respectively in the junior varsity boys race.
In the girls race, Katahdin’s Jordyn Ritchie finished second with a time of 23:28.11. For Houlton, Emmalyne Drake was the top runner, placing fourth at 24:09.91. She was followed by Alyssa Abbotoni in fifth place at 24:13.29. Lauren Swimm placed sixth in the junior varsity race with a time of 37:21.79.
For Hodgdon, Jeannelle Ross was 10th with a time of 25:59.86, while Jillian Ross was 12th at 27:45.60.
“Again the story for this meet was the sweltering heat and humid conditions to race in,” Rines said. “Unlike Saturday, however, our game plan for this meet was to treat it like a practice and really work on our pace per mile. Doing so allowed us to learn valuable lessons on how to pace, conserve energy, and properly prep and execute a race plan. It also allows us to stay somewhat fresh for the Festival of Champions this Saturday which is one of the highlight races of the entire season.”
The Shires’ next meet is Saturday at the Festival of Champions in Belfast. More than 80 schools and 2,000 runners attend this meet.
