Shire girls collect 5th straight shutout

The Houlton girls soccer squad notched its fifth consecutive shutout, and seventh in the past nine games, on the soccer pitch Wednesday evening with an impressive 8-0 victory over Mattanawcook Academy.

Houlton (9-0) is the only undefeated team in the Class C North region this fall. The Shires will face their sternest test Saturday when the team travels to Orono (8-1). Houlton beat Orono 3-2 at home earlier this season in a hard-fought game. Orono is the defending state champs in Class C.

Against the Lynx, Mia Hanning scored two goals and added two assists, while Kolleen Bouchard chipped in two goals and one assist to lead the team.

Sierra Hoops tallied a goal and 2 assists for 9-0 Houlton, while Amelia Ivey, Rebecca Howe and Anessa Wilde chipped in with a goal apiece. Samantha Condon and Claire Gilpatrick each had an assist.

Tessa Solomon and Kennedy Buzzeo combined for 3 saves on 4 shots.

Kiana Hafford made 4 stops on 18 shots for 3-6 Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln.

Thursday’s slate of games and meets sees the Houlton golf team competing in the Penobscot Valley Athletic Conference championship at the JaTo Golf Course in Lincoln today. Carlisle golfer Libby Boone also is participating in the event as an individual.

In soccer, the Houlton boys will host Lee Academy at 4 p.m., Southern Aroostook travels to East Grand (boys at 2:30 p.m., girls at 4 p.m.). The Caribou girls travel to Foxcroft Academy for a 4 p.m. game and Fort Kent heads south to take on Ashland (boys at 5 p.m., girls at 7 p.m.).

Houlton boys 1, Mattanawcook Academy 0 — An incoming storm halted Wednesday’s boys game between the Shires and the Lynx in the second half. The net result was a 1-0 victory for the Houlton squad.

Houlton’s Keegan Gentle scored the game’s only goal with an unassisted blast from about 10 yards out midway through the first half.  

Corbett Arnold had 3 saves against 6 shots from the Shires and Drew Foley had 4 saves against six shots from MA.

With the win, Houlton improves to 4-3-1 on the year, while MA drops to 2-6.

Katahdin girls 3, Hodgdon 0 — At Stacyville Wednesday, three different players scored solo goals to lead Katahdin past the visiting Hawks. Junior Erin Lake scored off an assist from freshman Emma McNally and eighth-grader Makayla Hartsgrove converted from an assist by Danielle Libby. Senior Kate Anderson also scored, with Lake assisting.

In goal for the Cougars (3-4-1), senior Natalie Rickards made four saves on eight shots. For Hodgdon (5-4-1), sophomore Autumn Ganzel finished with five saves on 14 shots.

Katahdin boys 1, Hodgdon 1 — At Katahdin, the Cougars and Hawks battled to the 1-1 stalemate after two overtime periods failed to result in a winner. Katahdin’s Bradley Hotham put the Cougars on the board with 37:49 left in the second half on a free kick play. Hodgdon’s Dylan Oliver produced the game-tying goal off a penalty kick with 18:15 remaining in regulation.

Tanner Lane stopped 11 out of 20 shots for the team Cougars (2-5-1). Michael Sanders stopped 8 of 10 shots for the Hawks (6-2-2).

Foxcroft Academy boys 6, Caribou 2 — At Dover-Foxcroft, Jacob Olson and Jae Park both scored in the first six minutes of the second half to help the Ponies pull away from visiting Caribou.

Austin Bickmore also scored two goals for Foxcroft Academy, with Shadane Hamilton and Simison Wanimbo netting a goal each. Olson posted two assists while David Chen, Cody Tetlo and Wanimbo added one apiece.

Lucas Ames made 10 saves on 14 shots for FA (5-2).

Alex Ezzy scored both goals for Caribou (3-5). Noah Hixon had 11 saves on 23 shots.
