The Presque Isle varsity boys’ soccer team has suffered only one loss, which came way back on Sept. 7 at home to Fort Kent. On Monday afternoon, the Wildcats have a chance to knock off the lone undefeated team in Class B North and if they do so, could climb into the top spot in the Class B North standings.
Presque Isle, in third place in the division, makes the trip to East Machias to take on 8-0 and fifth-ranked Washington Academy in a key mid-season showdown. After scoring 24 goals in their first three games, the Raiders’ attack has slowed down a bit, with 15 goals in their last five contests.
The Wildcats’ defense has been stingy, coming off shutouts over both Ellsworth and Foxcroft Academy (see details of Saturday’s game below). Coach Joe Greaves’ squad has recorded three shutouts overall during its 6-1-1 start.
In other soccer matches Monday, Hodgdon travels to Dyer Brook for girls’ and boys’ games against Southern Aroostook that begin at 3:30 p.m., while Highview Christian squares off against East Grand in Danforth for a girls-boys doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m.
Both the Southern Aroostook boys (0-8) and East Grand girls (0-7-1) are still looking for their first victories this season.
Summaries of contests played Friday and Saturday follow:
Southern Aroostook girls 2, Ashland 1 — At Dyer Brook Saturday, Kylie Vining’s goal early in the second half enabled the Warriors to upend previously unbeaten Ashland.
Kassidy Mathers added a first-half goal and Makaelyn Porter two assists for 6-2 Southern Aroostook. Goalkeeper Sydney Brewer had 14 saves on 21 shots.
Willow Hall scored off a Shelby Stolze assist in the second half for the Hornets, whose record fell to 9-1. Teammate Ava Cameron, filling in for starter Megan Cote, collected one save on four shots.
Ashland boys 3, Southern Aroostook 0 — Mason Deabay knocked in two goals to lead the Hornets past the Warriors Saturday at Dyer Brook.
Dylan Haley added a goal and an assist for 4-5-1 Ashland. Steven Bellanceau saved both shots he faced in goal for the shutout.
Steven Rackliff collected 15 saves on 31 shots for Southern Aroostook.
“We’re defending better as the season progresses,” SA coach Paul Sherman said. “We also kept possession of the ball longer today, so we did not wear ourselves out defending. We had some nice passing sequences. We are not covering the field as well as we should yet, leaving large gaps in the midfield especially, but we are improving.”
Caribou girls 7, Hermon 2 — At Hermon Saturday, Searra Herbert and Hope Shea each netted two goals as unbeaten Caribou rolled to the win.
Edie Shea, Ashley Matlock and Gabrielle Marquis added goals for 9-0 Caribou. Jaelynn Doody and Sage Dubay combined to save 10 of 15 shots in goal.
Alex Allain and Olivia Nash tallied goals for 6-2-1 Hermon, with Emily Smith and Myah Goodale adding assists. Olivia Tardie and Alexis Homsted shared goalkeeping chores and combined for 11 saves on 18 shots.
Hermon boys 2, Caribou 1 — James Peterson opened up the scoring 6-1/2 minutes into the match and then scored the tiebreaking goal midway through the second half as the Hawks won at home Saturday.
Tommy Pinette of the Vikings broke through with a nice shot into the side netting from about 10 yards out on a nice pass from Alex Bouchard to tie the game at 1-1 with 26 minutes to go. Caribou coach Scott Hunter said his team had several other great chances to score in the second half, but came up empty.
Noah Hixon saved 11 shots in goal for the Vikes, who outshot the Hawks by a 30-16 margin.
Presque Isle boys 3, Foxcroft Academy 0 — Griffin Guerrette’s two first-half goals helped lift the Wildcats past the Ponies in Presque Isle Saturday.
Zech Morse added a goal and assist and Jonah Hudson an assist for Presque Isle. Goalkeeper Jason Dumais saved eight of nine shots for the Wildcats.
Lucas Ames stopped six of nine shots for the Ponies.
Presque Isle girls 6, Foxcroft Academy 0 — At Presque Isle Saturday, Madison Michaud recorded two goals and two assists to help the Wildcats improve to 6-2.
Paige McHatten, Eleanor St. Peter, Molly Kingsbury and Emily Wheaton also scored goals for Presque Isle. Savannah Rodriguez made four saves in goal to record the shutout.
Foxcroft’s Tiara Prescott finished with 20 saves on 28 shots.
Central Aroostook girls 9, Fort Fairfield 2 — Kassie Levesque and Kate Levesque each knocked in three goals to lead Central Aroostook past Fort Fairfield Friday in Mars Hill.
Caitlyn Harris contributed two goals and Olivia Pelletier had another for the Panthers. Harris and Macey Coffin shared goalkeeping duties and combined for two saves on eight shots.
Kayla Tisdale had both Tiger goals. Emily Everett saved 29 of 47 shots.
