The Aroostook League championships in cross country are set to start at 4 p.m. in Houlton to highlight varsity sports action on Tuesday, Oct. 3.
Schools represented are Caribou, Fort Kent, Greater Houlton Christian Academy, Hodgdon, Houlton, Katahdin, Madawaska, MSSM, Presque Isle, Washburn and Wisdom.
On Tuesday’s soccer schedule, MSSM is at Fort Kent, with the girls’ game to begin at 5 p.m. and the boys to follow at 7 p.m.; Ashland plays at Katahdin, with both the girls’ and boys’ matches getting underway at 3:30 p.m.; and Presque Isle squares off against Washington Academy for a 4 p.m. contest in East Machias.
Summaries of Monday’s soccer matches follow:
Hodgdon 8, Southern Aroostook 2 — At Dyer Brook Monday, Josh Palmer scored four goals, while Dylan Oliver had two goals and two assists to carry the Hawks past Southern Aroostook. Josh Foster and Nick Sherman also had goals.
Gavin Vining had a goal and assist for the Warriors, while Brett Williams also scored a goal.
Hodgdon goalies Michael Sanders and Cody Barton combined for six saves on 10 shots, including stopping a penalty kick. For Southern Aroostook, three Warriors spent time in net, tallying 17 saves on 33 shots.
Hodgdon improves to 7-2-2, while SA drops to 0-9 on the season.
“The score is more lopsided than the game was, though Hodgdon was clearly better,” SA coach Paul Sherman said. “Hodgdon has some very good skill up front, and was very good in the air, scoring several goals off crosses to headers.”
SACS maintained possession of the ball much better in Monday’s game, Sherman added. “We generated several more scoring chances than we have been,” he said. “Their goalie saved a penalty kick and we had a goal disallowed because we were fouled just before we shot and scored. So, it was a better match than the score indicates. We are improving.”
Southern Aroostook girls 4, Hodgdon 0 — At Dyer Brook, Emma Nadeau, Makaelyn Porter, Kylie Vining, and Kassidy Mathers each scored a goal to propel the Southern Aroostook Warriors past the Hodgdon Hawks.
Maddie Cummings, Aliyah Morales, Porter, and Vining also added assists for the Warriors as they improve to 7-2.
Sydney Brewer had three saves on four shots for Southern Aroostook. Autumn Ganzel had 17 saves on 26 shots for the 5-5-1 Hawks.
Washington Academy boys 3, Presque Isle 1 — The Presque Isle boys’ soccer team led for nearly all the first half, but could not hold off the Washington Academy Raiders Monday in East Machias.
After Griffin Guerrette converted a Jonah Hudson assist to put the Wildcats on the board less than five minutes into the match, WA finally knotted the score with just over a minute to play before intermission. The Raiders dominated the second half and came through with the game-winning goal with 13 minutes left and an insurance tally with five minutes to play in the victory.
Washington Academy is now 9-0 and owns a 44-match winning streak. PI fell to 6-2-2.
