LINCOLN, Maine — The Houlton golf squad finished as runners up Thursday at the Penobscot Valley Conference championships at the JaTo Golf Course.

Houlton’s score of 353 was well behind first-place Mattanawcook Academy, whose team fired a 338 total on the day. George Stevens Academy was third at 381.

“(It was a) tough day,” Houlton coach Dave Grant said. “Our scores were higher than our season averages.”

Houlton’s Wyatt Harvey was the top Shire golfer on the day as he fired an 83 over 18-holes. Isaac Vega was second with an 89, followed by Drew Marino at 90 and Nick Brewer at 91.

“Wyatt played very steady and was the only person on our team to qualify for state individuals,” Grant said.

The cutoff to qualify for states for boys was 87.

On the girls side, Sydney Lorom shot a 103, missing the state cutoff by just three strokes.

“They changed the ladies cut this year from 110 to 100,” Grant said. “She has played so well the last part of the season and I am very proud of her for the way she handled all the pressure I put on her this year. For her first year, she did great.”

MA was led by Logan Thompson with a 72, Max Woodman with 84, Duncan McIntyre 86 and Brandon Savage 96.

The Shires will compete in the state Class C golf championships Saturday, Oct. 7, at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro

“Fortunately for us we haven’t played our best golf of the season yet,” the coach said.
