James Allen Childers

REDDING, California – James Allen Childers, a 30 year veteran of the United Air Force died after a lengthy illness at the age of 83.  He was born in Fresno, CA, to his parents, Jueldean and Halley Childers.

Jim is survived by Sherie, his wife of 62 years, beautiful daughters, Deb and Laurie, grandchildren, Jesse, Kelley and Kristopher; great-grandchildren, Noah, Sadie, Riley, Benjamin, Jane, Gigi and Step-brother, Clinton.
Jim joined the Naval Reserve in 1952, shortly after graduating Sierra High School. He later enlisted in the Air Force in 1953 and attained the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. During his career he served four tours of duty in Southeast Asia as a B-52 Gunner and accrued 1500 Combat Hours. Jim’s decorations included the Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with Oak leaves and Air Force Commendation Medal. He loved playing his guitar, singing and had a band at one time.
After his S.E. tours were over, he held various positions at Wing and Division levels at four Michigan bases and retired from the Air Force in 1982. After returning to California Jim attended College and entered the Police Academy at age 50. After graduating he was hired by Hanford, CA Police Department. Jim thoroughly enjoyed six years of Patrol and was a darned good cop.
After leaving Hanford, the couple moved to Morro Bay, CA, so Jim could obtain a boat and ocean fish.
He soon discovered the local Coast Guard Auxiliary and quickly became a member. He studied to become a Coxswain and his boat, the “Ain’t It Easy” was approved for use on patrols. He was particularly pleased to assist families in the scattering ashes at sea and minding the station when the crews were on a rescue.
After thirteen years in Morro Bay and thirteen in San Luis Obispo, it was time to move closer to family. Daughter Laurie and husband, Bruce invited us to move up to Redding and in 2012 settled at River Oaks Retirement Community. A few more years of long talks, laughter at memories and then on August 17th, he left us.
We miss you, Jimbo.
