PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Washburn boys and the Greater Houlton Christian Academy girls escaped with narrow victories Wednesday at the Aroostook League Middle School Cross Country Championships.

The meet, held on a two-mile course at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, saw the Beavers and the Eagles both prevail by a mere point over the runners-up.
The Washburn Beaver boys nipped Caribou, 52-53, while GHCA also edged past the Vikes on the girls’ side, 33-34.

For the boys, Presque Isle took third with 63 points, followed by GHCA (83) and Woodland (96).

In the girls’ team competition, PI came in third with 80 points and Woodland tallied 96.
Individually, Daniel Arce of Washburn won the boys’ race with a time of 12 minute and 10.6 seconds and Annalise Jandreau of Caribou was first for girls in 13:05.6.
The rest of the boys’ top 10 included: second place, Daniel Ross of GHCA, 12:17.6; third, Luke Streinz of Katahdin, 12:29.6; fourth, George Ferland of Woodland, 13:00.7; fifth, Tom O’Meara of Caribou, 13:03.3; sixth, Jaron Leach of Presque Isle, 13:15.4; seventh, Silas Graham of GHCA, 13:17.2; eighth, Seth Lister of Caribou, 13:37.5; ninth, Ezra Leach of Presque Isle, 13:41.6; and 10th, Christopher Tardie of Washburn, 13:48.2.
After Jandreau, finishing in the top 10 for girls were: second place, Kayley Bell of Caribou, 13:11.1; third, Teanne Ewings of GHCA, 14:15.2; fourth, Leanne Ross of GHCA, 14:16.7; fifth, Lura Page of Washburn, 14:23.4; sixth, Tressa Salch of Caribou, 14:37.6; seventh, Saffayia Durepo of Woodland, 14:49.4; eighth, Drew Warman of GHCA, 15:01.2; ninth, Mia Henderson of GHCA, 15:05.5; and 10th, Mikaeyla Spooner of Caribou, 15:16.6.
Elizabeth Wing was the top Presque Isle finisher, coming in at 15:23.9, good for 11th overall.
Fifty boys and 38 girls competed in the race, which was held in cool temperatures and under sunny skies.
