Busy soccer weekend on tap as playoffs near

Friday and Saturday will be busy time for boys and girls soccer squads as the regular season rapidly winds to a close.

The final countable day for regular season games is Tuesday, Oct. 17, with the preliminary playoffs set for Friday, Oct. 20, for boys squads and Saturday, Oct. 21 for girls teams.

Friday’s slate of games sees Central Aroostook at Hodgdon boys and girls, 3:30 p.m.; Stearns at Southern Aroostook girls, 3:30 p.m.; Shead boys at Southern Aroostook, 3:30 p.m.; East Grand girls at Woodland, 3:30 p.m.; Wisdom at Fort Fairfield girls and boys, 3:30 p.m.; and Ashland girls and boys at Fort Kent, 5 and 7 p.m.

Saturday’s soccer matchups feature Houlton traveling to Calais (boys at noon, girls at 2 p.m.); East Grand journeying to MSSM (boys at noon, girls at 2 p.m.); Old Town at Caribou (girls at 1 p.m. and boys at 3 p.m.); and John Bapst at Presque Isle, (girls at 1 p.m. and boys at 3 p.m.).

The individual state championships in golf are Saturday at Natanis Golf Club in Vassalboro. Local golfers participating are Libby Boone of Carlisle in the girls tourney, and Shane Stackpole of Central Aroostook and Houlton’s Wyatt Harvey for the boys.

The Penobscot Valley Conference cross country championships take place Saturday at Orono High School beginning at noon. The regional and state meets are the following two weekends.

Results for Thursday’s games, that were reported, are as follows:

Central Aroostook boys 5, Easton 2 — At Easton, Central Aroostook of Mars Hill scored goals in the final 22 minutes of the match to pull away with the win. Hunter Wardwell and Hayden Kingsbury scored two goals each and Kingsbury provided an assist on another goal by Taylor Campbell.

Noah Hanscomb and Collin Sotomayor scored the goals for Easton and Seth Faloon had an assist.

Brayden Bradbury saved seven of 14 shots for CAHS. Kody Carter saved six of 13 shots for Easton.

Central Aroostook girls 8, Easton 2 — Kassie Levesque scored four times and younger sister Katie tallied three goals as the Panthers won easily in Easton. Grace Giberson had the other goal for 8-5 Central Aroostook. Delia Bonner had two goals for the 3-8-2 Bears.

MSSM boys 6, Wisdom 0 —  At Limestone, Tobyn Blatt had his third three-goal match of the season to propel the Maine School of Science and Mathematics past Wisdom of Saint Agatha.

Will Perkins added two goals and an assist for the 5-2 Penguins while Rudy Ye scored a goal and Harrison Walters and Trevor Gava each contributed an assist.

Goalie Myles Benica recorded the shutout for the Penguins. Trevor Couture stopped 30 of 36 shots in net for 3-9 Wisdom.

MSSM girls 6, Wisdom 1 — The Penguins shot into playoff contention by beating the Pioneers at home. Madelyn Battcock-Emerson scored three goals, Samantha Zwecker two and Lydian Frost one for MSSM, which is now 3-4.

Bella Martin made 19 saves for the winners. Bailey Bellefleur scored the Pioneer goal. Wisdom’s record fell to 7-5.

Washburn girls 5, Van Buren 1 — At Washburn, Kassie Farley recorded a hat trick and Madison Miller and Alexis Carney each added one goal in the Beavers’ victory. Leah Gendreau scored Van Buren’s goal.

Washburn keeper Carly Bragg made nine saves on 10 shots and Van Buren keeper Bailey LaPlante had 30 saves on 44 shots.

Washburn boys 2, Van Buren 0 — The Beavers picked up their second consecutive win, albeit three weeks apart, by blanking the Crusaders.

Devon Maynard scored a first-half goal and Jovanni Taveras netted another in the second half for 2-11 Washburn. The Crusaders fell to 5-9 with the loss.

Caribou girls 2, Nokomis 0 — The Vikes bounced back from their first loss of the season the previous evening at Presque Isle by winning the road match at Newport.

Ashley Matlock provided a goal and an assist and Alexis Rodriguez also scored for the 11-1 Vikes. The Warriors’ record is now 1-11-1.
