The Presque Isle Wildcat boys’ soccer team has a chance to sew up first place Monday in Class B North heading into the playoffs.
PI travels to Brewer Monday for a 3:30 p.m. match against the Witches. The Wildcats are currently on top of the division and hold a 10-2-1 record. Brewer is currently in fifth place at 9-3-1.
The regular season ends Tuesday and the postseason begins Friday.
In other Monday soccer games, Madawaska is in Easton, with a start time of 3:30 p.m. for both the girls and boys; Katahdin travels to Southern Aroostook, for boys and girls games, both at 3:30 p.m.; Central Aroostook travels to Ashland for a make-up game which begins at 4 p.m.; East Grand boys travel to High View Christian for a 4:30 p.m. tilt; and the Fort Kent boys team tries to avenge its only loss of the season when they play the Vikings in Caribou at 7 p.m.
Several games were played over the weekend and the most surprising outcome came out of Fort Kent Friday as the Ashland boys, which entered the game ranked 15th in Class D, played to a 1-1 draw with Fort Kent, the top team in Class C.
Drew Condon connected on a direct kick in the first half for the Hornets’ goal and Ashland held that one-goal lead until inside of 10 minutes to play when the Warriors’ Noah Martin converted a penalty kick to tie it.
The teams played through 10 minutes of overtime without another goal being scored, as Steven Bellanceau of the Hornets made a fingertip save in the second OT to preserve the deadlock.
“It took a strong start from us to really set the tone,” said Ashland coach Trevor Hews. “We sometimes tend to come out slow, but in this game we took control early and our early goal was huge for our players’ confidence.
“If anything, it showed our team what we are capable of when we are ready to compete and hopefully we can carry the momentum into our last couple of games and the playoffs,” Hews added.
Ashland (5-5-2) moved up to 14th place. In addition to the game Monday against CA, the Hornets will take on Wisdom Tuesday to close out the season.
The Warriors are still in first place entering Monday’s game in Caribou with their 10-1-2 record.
