Dates and times have been established for several local soccer teams’ preliminary playoff matches, set for Friday and Saturday.
The Maine Principals’ Association released its final Heal Points standings Wednesday afternoon, bringing good news to many squads in the region.
In Class B, the No. 12 Caribou boys (6-8) make the trip south to take on Brewer (9-4-1) on Saturday at 2 p.m. The teams met once during the regular season, with the Witches pulling out a 3-2 triumph in Caribou on Sept. 8.
The team that advances plays against either No. 4 Winslow or No. 13 Mount Desert Island in the quarterfinals Wednesday, Oct. 25.
In Class D, the No. 4 Fort Fairfield boys (11-3) host No. 13 Schenck of East Millinocket (6-7-1) at 2 p.m. Friday. The teams met in last year’s quarterfinal round, with coach John Ala’s Tigers pulling out a 9-1 victory en route to their berth in the regional championship game.
The winner takes on either No. 5 Jonesport-Beals or No. 12 Ashland in the quarterfinal round.
The MSSM boys, in their first season as an independent varsity team, also will host a prelim match. The No. 7 Penguins (6-2), coached by Jon Hamilton, entertain No. 10 Madawaska (7-7) Friday at 6 p.m. at Limestone Community School. The teams did not square off during the regular season.
No. 2 Central Aroostook of Mars Hill (13-1) awaits the winner of the MSSM-Madawaska game, with that quarterfinal contest to be played next Wednesday at a time to be determined.
The Easton boys, ranked ninth with a 7-6-1 record, meet up against the No. 8 Hodgdon Hawks in Hodgdon Friday at 1:30 p.m. The teams did not play during the regular season. No. 1 Bangor Christian hosts the Bears-Hawks winner in the quarterfinals Oct. 25.
The No. 12 Ashland boys (6-6-2), who used their tie against Class C No. 1 Fort Kent on Friday just to get into the playoffs, play at Jonesport-Beals (11-2-1), ranked fifth, in a 2 p.m. match Friday.
East Grand (6-8) finished 11th and will be on the road Friday for a 2:30 p.m. prelim game against No. 6 Penobscot Valley (9-3-2) of Howland. The two teams did not meet during the regular season.
The winner plays either No. 3 Woodland or No. 14 Shead of Eastport in the next round.
Girls Soccer
For the girls, in Class D, No. 5 Central Aroostook of Mars Hill hosts No. 12 Shead of Eastport at 4 p.m. Friday in the first meeting of the season between the squads.
The winner plays the No. 4 Madawaska-No. 13 Schenck of East Millinocket winner in the quarterfinals Tuesday, Oct. 24.
The No. 9 Washburn girls (7-5-2) will take on No. 8 Wisdom (7-7) in St. Agatha beginning at 1:30 p.m. The teams met twice in a five-day span in August, with each team winning on the opponent’s home field by 4-1 scores.
No. 1 Penobscot Valley of Howland hosts the winner in the quarterfinals.
Hodgdon (7-6-1) finished seventh and hosts No. 10 Katahdin on Friday, Oct. 20 at 3:30 p.m. in the prelim round. The Hawks and Cougars battled to a 2-2 tie Sept. 11, and Katahdin picked up a 3-0 victory Sept. 27.
The winner advances to the quarterfinals, where they will face No. 2 Ashland (13-1) Oct. 24.
MSSM (4-4), ranked 11th, travels to Bangor to play Bangor Christian (8-5-1), the No. 6 team, Friday at 3 p.m. No. 3 Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook (12-2) awaits the Penguins-Patriots winner in the next round. The Warriors did not face either MSSM or Bangor Christian during the regular season.
Other local teams drawing byes and going straight into next week’s quarterfinals are the Houlton girls (13-1, No. 1 in Class C), the Caribou girls (13-1, No. 1 in Class B), the Presque Isle girls (11-3, No. 2 in Class B) and the Presque Isle boys (11-2-1, No. 1 in Class B).
