Regular season over for soccer teams, playoffs begin this weekend

The Presque Isle boys are the No. 1 team in Class B North heading into the playoffs.

The Wildcats capped the regular season on the road Monday with a 2-0 victory over Brewer. It was the team’s fifth win in a row and eighth in its last nine games. Six of the team’s last seven wins were by shutout.

Griffin Guerrette scored off a Gage LeTourneau assist with 15:25 left in the first half and Kyler Caron added an insurance goal off a Guerrette pass with 18:26 left in the second as PI improved to 11-2-1 on the season. The Wildcats earned a bye through the preliminary round and will host a quarterfinal match on Oct. 25.

The Presque Isle girls played at Brewer Tuesday afternoon and a win would have secured its top two position in the ‘B’ rankings.

Central Aroostook (second place as of Monday night), Fort Fairfield (fourth), Easton (10th) and Ashland (13th) are all bound for the Class D playoffs on the boys’ side, while Ashland (second), Central Aroostook (fifth) and Washburn (ninth) will qualify for the girls’ post-season.

The prelim round gets underway with matches both Friday and Saturday. The final standings will be released Wednesday.

Summaries of other matches played from Oct. 10-16 are as follows:

Central Aroostook boys 4, Ashland 0 — At Ashland Monday, Taylor Campbell scored a pair of goals and Hayden Kingsbury and Hunter Wardwell had the others as Central Aroostook of Mars Hill concluded its regular season at 13-1. Ashland is now 5-6-2.

Easton boys 2, Madawaska 1 — Kooper Kinney scored the game-winner off an Isaac Currier assist with 2:12 left in regulation to lift the Bears past the Owls at Easton Monday.

By winning, the Bears avenged a season-opening 4-3 loss at Madawaska. Collin Sotomayor scored the tying goal for Easton off of another assist by Isaac Currier with 10:58 to go. Max Gendreau scored for Madawaska in the first half off a Robert Lausier assist.

Kody Carter made six saves on nine shots for 7-6-1 Easton while Andrew Nadeau had nine on 17 shots for 7-7 Madawaska.

Madawaska girls 10, Easton 0 — Hannah Nadeau scored four goals, Jenna Dugal had three, Brianne Thibeault two and Kassie Blanchette one as the Owls closed the season with a road victory Monday.

Presque Isle boys 1, John Bapst 0 — A first-half goal by Colby Carlisle held up as the Wildcats won their ninth consecutive match Saturday in Presque Isle.

Adam Paterson had the assist on the play, which started on a corner kick. Jason Dumais earned his sixth shutout in goal for PI.

John Bapst girls 4, Presque Isle 2 — Tia Zephir scored all four goals as Bapst improved to 11-2 with Saturday’s victory at Presque Isle.

Her first goal came 32 seconds into the match and she added a second goal nine minutes later. Zephir added a pair of second-half goals. Gina Cambria picked up two assists and goalkeeper Kayla Massey saved seven of nine shots.

Emily Wheaton and Paige McHatten each scored for Presque Isle, which fell to 10-3. Savannah Rodriguez had four saves on eight shots for the Wildcats.

Ashland boys 1, Fort Kent 1 — On Friday in Fort Kent, the Ashland boys, which entered the game ranked 15th in Class D, played to a 1-1 draw with the Warriors, the top team in Class C.

Drew Condon connected on a direct kick in the first half for the Hornets’ goal and Ashland held that one-goal lead until inside of 10 minutes to play when the Warriors’ Noah Martin converted a penalty kick to tie it.

The teams played through 10 minutes of overtime without another goal being scored, as Steven Bellanceau of the Hornets made a fingertip save in the second OT to preserve the deadlock.

“It took a strong start from us to really set the tone,” said Ashland coach Trevor Hews. “We sometimes tend to come out slow, but in this game we took control early and our early goal was huge for our players’ confidence.

“If anything, it showed our team what we are capable of when we are ready to compete and hopefully we can carry the momentum into our last couple of games and the playoffs,” Hews added.

Ashland girls 2, Fort Kent 1 — The Hornet girls moved to 12-1 by winning on the Warriors’ home field Friday night.

Amber Chasse scored the game-winning goal for Ashland, while Willow Hall had the team’s other goal. Desirae Hafford scored for Fort Kent (7-6).

Central Aroostook boys 6, Hodgdon 3 — The Panthers doubled the Hawks’ scoring in Hodgdon Friday.

Among the goal scorers for CA were Bryan Anthony, Hayden Kingsbury, Hunter Wardwell, Ben Thomas and Cody McCrum. The sixth goal scorer was not reported.

Josh Foster scored a pair of goals for the Hawks, while freshman Jeremiah Goff recorded his first varsity goal. Dylan Oliver, Wyatt Foster and Josh Palmer each had an assist.

Central Aroostook girls 3, Hodgdon 1 — Kate Levesque scored goals 1:44 apart late in the first half to help spearhead the Panthers’ win at Hodgdon Friday.

Sabra Scott scored for the Hawks and Kayla Martin posted the other goal for CA, which finished the regular season at 9-5. Caitlyn Harris saved six shots for the Panthers and Autumn Ganzel collected 26 for the Hawks (7-6-1).

Central Aroostook boys 5, Easton 2 — At Easton Thursday, Hunter Wardwell and Hayden Kingsbury scored two goals each and Kingsbury provided an assist on another goal by Taylor Campbell as Central Aroostook prevailed.

Noah Hanscomb and Collin Sotomayor scored the goals for Easton and Seth Faloon had an assist.

Brayden Bradbury saved seven of 14 shots for the Panthers. Kody Carter saved six of 13 shots for Easton.

Central Aroostook girls 8, Easton 2 — Kassie Levesque scored four times and younger sister Katie tallied three goals as the Panthers won easily in Easton Thursday. Grace Giberson had the other goal for 8-5 Central Aroostook. Delia Bonner had two goals for the 3-8-2 Bears.

Washburn girls 5, Van Buren 1 — At Washburn, Kassie Farley recorded a hat trick and Madison Miller and Alexis Carney each added one goal in the Beavers’ victory. Leah Gendreau scored Van Buren’s goal.

Washburn keeper Carly Bragg made nine saves on 10 shots and Van Buren keeper Bailey LaPlante had 30 saves on 44 shots.

Washburn boys 2, Van Buren 0 — The Beavers picked up their second consecutive win by blanking the Crusaders.

Devon Maynard scored a first-half goal and Jovanni Taveras netted another in the second half for 2-11 Washburn. The Crusaders fell to 5-9 with the loss.

Ashland girls 2, Central Aroostook 1 — At Ashland last Tuesday, Amber Chasse’s goal off a Morgan Doughty corner kick less than 10 minutes into the second half proved to be the game winner as the Hornets edged Central Aroostook.

Shelby Stolze scored Ashland’s first goal on a Willow Hall assist, tying the game four minutes after Kate Levesque scored the Panthers’ goal on a direct kick in the first half.

Ashland goalie Megan Cote made seven saves on 10 shots. Central Aroostook’s Caitlyn Harris made 15 saves on 22 shots.

Easton boys 5, Van Buren 3 — At Easton, Isaac Currier scored twice to lead the Bears to victory last Tuesday in their first game after a three-week harvest break.

Collin Sotomayor and Kooper Kinney each added a goal and an assist for Easton, while Camden Michaud also scored for the Bears.

Matt Burgess scored twice and Noah Pelletier once for Van Buren.

Kody Carter earned the win in goal, collecting six saves on 10 shots. Van Buren goalie Colby Lapointe made seven saves on 16 shots.

Easton girls 6, Van Buren 0 — At Easton last Tuesday, Isabelle Morin netted five goals and an assist and Delia Bonner contributed the other goal and had three assists as the Bears were successful in their first game since Sept. 19.
