NEW LIMERICK, Maine — Maine Woodland Owners and Vital Pathways will sponsor the 2017 Fall Forestry Workshop on Tuesday, Oct. 24, in New Limerick.
The session is titled Forestry for Maine Birds, and will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Houlton Community Golf Course clubhouse in New Limerick.
Lunch will be provided, and continuing education credits are available as follows: CLP = 1/2 Day, QLP = 4 hrs., LPF = 2 Cat.1, and SAF = 3 Cat.1.
Forestry for Maine Birds pairs silviculture, the art and science of forest management, with the habitat needs of Maine’s migratory forest songbirds. Learn to assess forest habitat and consider management options that benefit forest songbirds in a variety of forest types. This workshop is for foresters, woodland owners, loggers, and bird enthusiasts.
Presenters will include Amanda Mahaffey, northeast regional director of the Forest Stewards Guild, and Sue Gallo, wildlife biologist with the Maine Audubon Society. Foresters Jon Scott of Prentiss and Carlisle and Dan Jacobs of the Maine Forest Service will facilitate.

8:00: Background and priority species for Aroostook Co.
9:15: Stop 1- Riparian buffer and introduction to Rapid Field Assessment
10:00: Stop 2 – Mixed hardwood stand and group exercise
11:00: Stop 3 – Recent winter harvest in a softwood stand
12:00: Lunch at the Club House
1:00: Wrap Up and Evaluations
