Houlton Recreation Programs offered

HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton Parks and Recreation Department is offering a number of programs this fall for both residents and nonresidents. The following is a listing of some of the programs being offered.

“A Morning of Magic” will be held Saturday, Oct. 28, from 9:30-11 a.m. just in time for Halloween. The magician “Conjuring Carroll” will perform his magic and balloon animal show for youngsters up to Grade 5. This free event will provide a snack and drink, along with a fun morning of magic. No costumes needed. Parents must accompany their children to this activity.

Red Cross Babysitters Course — This course will be offered to youth between the ages of 11-15. The course will be held at the Houlton Rec Center on Saturday, Nov. 4, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The cost is $50 per student and this course is limited to 12. Registration is required. To register, call the Rec at 532-1310 by Oct. 27. This course will give the babysitter the confidence and skills to take care of infants and toddlers.

The Houlton Recreation Department is currently accepting registrations for the following Youth Basketball Programs. Little Hoopsters for kindergarteners, Tykes Basketball for Grades 1 and 2, and Peewee Basketball for Grades 3 and 4. Registrations have been distributed throughout the local school systems or can be picked up at the Rec main office.

The “Little Hoopsters” program is designed with the youngsters in mind. It will be held on Saturdays, Dec. 2, 9 and 16 at the Houlton Recreation Department. They will work on fun dribbling and passing skills and on the last day they will have a game for parents and family to attend. Parents may choose between the 9 a.m. or 10 a.m. time slot. Each hour is limited to 15 children. The cost for the program is $25 per child. Registration is required and the deadline is Nov. 10.

Tykes and Peewee Basketball will start the week of Nov. 27. These two programs introduce basketball to youth through weekly practices and games and will run until Feb. 10. Each of these programs costs $25 for Houlton residents and $35 for non-Houlton residents. Registration deadline is Nov. 10.
