Members of Washburn’s Boy Scout Troop 177 attended the Pamola Lodge fall induction of the Order of the Arrow at Katahdin Scout Reservation in East Eddington over the weekend of Oct. 20-22.

Ryan Cole was inducted into the Order after being elected by his troop members in the spring at a special troop election.

Paul Tardie III sealed his membership in the Order after a series of tasks and questions that elevated him to Brotherhood status.

Those attending the weekend event were Scoutmaster Larry Harrison, Vigil member; Paul Tardie III, Brotherhood; Tony Sellars, assistant scoutmaster and Vigil member; Ryan Cole, Ordeal member; and Matthew Cole, North Star Chapter Order of the Arrow adviser.

PTO plans busy year

The Washburn Area PTO has many activities planned for the 2017-2018 school year.

The group started off the year with sponsoring a benefit supper for two local students with many medical challenges. As usual, the community pulled together to help these students.

Each year the PTO does fundraising to boost its coffers, but also commits to doing charitable events and hope to get the students and their families involved. The PTO will sell concessions at the middle school basketball games starting in November.

Other events include:

A bake sale Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 20 and 21, during parent/teacher conferences at the middle school. The group needs baked good to sell.

A Christmas shopping event at the middle school Thursday and Friday, Dec. 7 and 8, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. All of the students will be able to shop for loved ones at the ‘makeshift store’ just in time for the Christmas holiday. Donated items are needed to put in the ‘store’.

Candy Cane-O-Grams during December — students may purchase a candy cane for that someone special attached with a note.

New to PTO is a ‘Giving Tree’ that will be placed in the lobby of the middle school during community functions, which will contain cards with items that teachers need or want for the classrooms. Community members are encouraged to take one and send the selected item in to school for that teacher.
