100 Years Ago – Oct. 24, 1917
Transferred — Fred W. Manuel received last week a letter from his daughter Hazel, who is a member of a nursing unit in the battle zone in France, that she was recently transferred to a hospital in Switzerland, about 500 miles from Paris where she with other nurses are caring for soldiers who are on the dangerous list.
Purchased farm — W. Van Tasel has purchased the Cassidy farm, so-called, on the Ludlow Road, where he will manufacture cast stone products, from the large gravel and sand deposits which are on it.
75 Years Ago – Oct. 15, 1942
New position — Herbert Felker, popular member of Houlton’s Police force, said today that he accepted a position as chief of police in Lincoln. He is a graduate of Houlton High School and joined the Houlton Police Department three years ago.
Attends convention — Town Manager Woodbury E. Brackett left Friday night of last week for French Lick Spring, Ind., where he is attending the annual convention of the National Association of City Managers.
50 Years Ago – Oct. 25 , 1967
Anniversary — The Military Street Baptist Church is observing its centennial year and special services marking the 100th anniversary will begin this Sunday. The church has occupied its present location since 1893. After having lost its building in a great fire of 1902, members of the church formally dedicated the present structure in 1903.
Spanish teacher — Ricker College President C. Worth Howard has announced that Ernest Danache, an instructor of Spanish and French for the past 20 years at University of Haiti, has been appointed to give instruction in Spanish.
25 Years Ago – Oct. 21, 1992
Time capsule — Mrs. Lane’s second- and third-graders at Benedicta Elementary School have recently participated in making individual time capsules which will be opened one Jun 14, 1993. Students participating are; Amanda Rush, Angela Qualey, Martin Qualey, Melissa Allen, Dustin Qualey, Anthony Bearce and Jeffrey Bouchard.
Plan luncheon — The Sunshine Club is planning a luncheon at the clubhouse in New Limerick on Saturday . A beef stew will be served for $3, crafts and a food sale will also be held. Helping to prepare was Vallie Smith, Gertrude Lake, Marjorie Crockett, Clara Crawford, Dorothy Dunphy, Margaret Ingraham and Helen Cunliffe.
