CARIBOU, Maine — As of Monday, two vehicles have been hit with rocks while driving along Route 1 near the intersection with Fort Street in Caribou. Police have not found who is responsible for the damage, and are currently seeking the public’s assistance in “watching for suspicious activity along Route 1 in this area,” according to the department’s Administrative Assistant Laura Adams.
Jesse Faye of Presque Isle posted photos of his Jeep’s damaged windshield to Facebook after it was hit by rocks at about 12:45 p.m. on Oct 22. Just one week later, the post had nearly 600 shares.
Faye wrote that he was heading south on Route 1 just past the Fort Street intersection when his Jeep was “struck by two rocks” that scraped across the hood and damaged his windshield. It isn’t clear if the rocks were thrown or fired from a slingshot, but Faye said he did not see anyone.
“No one was hurt,” he wrote in his Facebook message. “However, I was sprayed in the face with small particles of glass.”

Faye added that he’s thankful the incident didn’t cause him to lose control of his Jeep and crash into another motorist. After stopping and checking the site, he said he also noticed numerous other rocks on the roadway near where he was hit, which he believes were remnants of previous attempts to strike vehicles.
Adams of the police department said that “another individual came in to report that her windshield had been hit and damaged in the same area” on Oct. 4.
Faye said that the rocks caused “a few thousand dollars in damage” to his vehicle. He said police told him they believe “some sort of sling shot was used.”
Anyone who sees anything near that area of Route 1 or who saw something suspicious in that area on either Oct. 4 or 22 is urged to call the Caribou Police at 493-3301.
