100 Years Ago – Oct. 31, 1917

    New rates Remember the new postal rates that into effect Nov. 2: three cents for letter postage, two cents on postal cards unless they are printed, then they remain at one cent. Drop letters remain at two cents.

   Contest winner Mrs. Olive B. Good of this town, on Friday last, received a telegram from the publishers of the Star Needle Works Journal announcing the good news that her entry in a contest under the auspices of the American Thread Co., for knitted and fancy work had been awarded first prize in Class C, which amounted to $75. The article entered was a lady’s knitted sweater of original design.

75 Years Ago – Oct. 22, 1942

    Collected Probably unsurpassed in this area was the community cooperation evidenced on Thursday of last week when Houlton and surrounding towns buckled down to the job of getting in the scrap from the homes and farms of the entire locality. The result of all this community effort was the collection of 1,070,000 pounds of scrap — about 535 tons, nearly doubling the goal of 300 tons.

    A long life Miss Eda Currier has recently received a very interesting letter from her great-uncle, Eber K. Bither, of Sime, California, Mr. Bither, a former resident of Linneus, will be 91 years of age in February. Mr. Bither is the only surviving member of a family of eight of which he was the oldest. He has lived to see six generations of the Bither family. He has also lived through four wars, having taken no active part in any war.

50 Years Ago – Nov. 1, 1967

    Anniversary An open house honoring the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Stilwell of Hodgdon was held at the Hodgdon High School gymnasium Oct. 22. More than 150 friends and relatives attended.

    Attend market Clayton Currie and Frank B. Dunn of the Dunn Furniture Company attended the Southern Furniture Market at High Point, N.C., this past week.

25 Years Ago – Oct. 28, 1992

   Class reunion The Class of 1962 of Island Falls High School held its 30-year reunion at the camp of George and Sharon Dubois at Pleasant Pond. There were 14 class members and two former teachers, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Harmon and Mrs. Anna Greenlaw. There was much laughter and storytelling, along with a look back at pictures from grade school and yearbooks.

   Receives scholarship — University of Maine President Frederick E. Hutchinson congratulated first-year student Ryan Hines of Houlton for receiving Presidential and Pulp and Paper Foundation scholarships and an Academic Achievement Award.
