We are currently feeding 66 cats at the Ark which are inside and another 10 to 15 outside that are feral. At times it can be a bit overwhelming. We have had straw and styrofoam coolers and a heated water bucket donated to help us care for the ferals this winter
On Sunday a group of people will be meeting at the sanctuary to close in the small shed out back to give these cats some type of shelter for the winter. This is a labor of love by some caring individuals that care about the welfare of these feral cats.
No animal should ever have to go through the cold winter months living outside and surviving anyway they know how. We have set up a feeding station so there will always be food and water for them. While the shed will not be heated the styrofoam coolers stuffed with hay will keep a cat comfortable in the cold winter weather.
Where did all of these strays and ferals come from? Many of them come from unaltered pets being let outside who then reproduce causing unwanted litters. They also come from people just up and moving away and not taking their pets with them.
Sadly many of these cats are left behind to fend for themselves. Having an animal is a lifetime commitment for the responsible pet owner. If you have an unaltered pet that you let outside then you are a part of the problem. You are the reason there are so many unwanted litters being born.
Having a pet is also a financial commitment, there is no such thing as a free cat. Everything costs money. Cats require vet care, food, shelter, flea treatments but most importantly they require neutering and spaying. if you can’t afford these things then you can’t afford a pet it is as simple as that.
While this article might seem a bit harsh for some, it is only meant to educate everyone. The things we see and deal with on a daily basis at the sanctuary are very sad and disheartening. While we know we cannot reach everyone with this message, it doesn’t mean that we are ever going to give up. It only means that we will try harder each and every day.
We are here to rescue those in need. We will not give up until they all have homes. We are determined to make a difference in the lives of every animal we come in contact with. “Our mission is to rescue, our dream is that someday we won’t have to.” Once again we ask you to please be a part of the solution and not a part of the problem.
